FYI...
The Audio Return Channel (ARC) mentioned by one user previously is intended to allow over-the-air TV watchers to hear the audio through their receiver. It shouldn't be used for all media sources, as it has limited codec capabilities since the more advanced codecs aren't used in broadcast TV (IE: no DTS-HD Master). The limitations of the ARC are dependent upon the capabilities of the TV and receiver.
[EDIT]
IE: My TV has only 2.0 audio ARC output. While my receiver can handle all of the codecs, it isn't receiving them from the TV ARC. Therefore, all of my sources (except Chromecast) connect through the receiver (4 HDMI in/1 out), with only one HDMI cable going from the receiver to the TV (4 HDMI in; basically a monitor at this point). My Logitech remote takes care of the switching and configuration for me. The TV ARC is used only for over-the-air and Chromecast content.
A cnet article may clarify this...Last edited by Tybalt39; 19 September 2014, 22:47.Tablet History:

ARC is good because when using several different devices through hdmi the av reciever will select the device that is currently in use with the tv (tv acts as a 4 way hdmi switch). My tv lets me have 5.1 sound from devices connected with hdmi passed through to my av recirever.
5.1 sound will only work if I activate dolby in my tv (see post 124 in this thread).
If I play a DTS video I simply select opical connection between let say R89 and the av reciever.
My av reciever has built in blueray so high quality blueray sound is not a problem.
That cnet article Tybalt39 posted is very good but it does not show the way my setup is connected with each other.Last edited by ssspacman; 19 September 2014, 20:40.

Has anyone with an AV receiver succeeded in the receiver recognizing surround sound over HDMI using oman's procedure?
As I have stated in an earlier post. When I connect my HP monitor to the HDMI port on the R89, I can hear that the digital noise going through. The same when I connect it to my Panasonic TV. The TV does recognize it as digital audio, (displayed on the settings page) but doesn't convert it to analog but rather try to play it as analog. (digital noise)

Let's make it easy, and help me to figure out the last one key issue, many thanks!
1.I want to exclude factors of different version FW or some mistake of update process before,so update the latest test FW:
Here is to download:update_R89_109k4108_test
Here is some instructions about how to update:
2.Log in Google Play and search Syslog and install it.
3.Set up your test scenario:
Just test only one AC3 video, the one I uploaded before.
Download here:hd_other_blue_ray_samsung_sound_demo_DD.m2ts
Playing the video from USB stick/HDD or NAS or SDcard by Video Player(the stock one),not from xbmc or mxplayer or else!!
Select Setting->Sound->Sound Devices Manager to HDMI Bitstream.
4.After that,play the videos.If not sound out,or not 5.1 sound..run Syslog(here may ask root permissions,Grant it).Select the right options,and click 'Take Log'
And then write my email and send it!!
Hi,all:

boot.img updated
Stock player almost ok (dolby disconnected briefly at about 5 seconds into video, rest of video dolby ok, xbmc not ok. Connected r89 -> tv -> hdmi arc to av reciever.
Av reciever directly no sound.
Log sent.
Will not do the hdmi switch from tv to av reciever test anymore as afraid r89/tv/av reciever will get damaged.Last edited by ssspacman; 22 September 2014, 18:31.

I also tried using the AndroidTool v2.3, selected the "boot.img", held the reset button inside the A/V hole then plugging in the OTG cable. But "no devices found" message never changed. A couple of weeks ago, I went through this whole process many times but could never get my windows 7 64bit computer to recognize this box.
So, I am not able to try this update.zip file.....MK818B, T428, ATV 1220, CS918S, TV01, S89H, R89, ADT-1, MK808B Plus, MINIX X8-H Plus, Tronsmart Orion R68

I will check the ZIP tonight and fix it if needed or if Oman doesnt get to it today.

I extracted the "boot.img" and placed it onto the external SD card and rebooted, it did not see any updates to install. I booted into recovery and selected install image file, but that did not work either. Will have to wait for Finless or Oman to come to my rescue.MK818B, T428, ATV 1220, CS918S, TV01, S89H, R89, ADT-1, MK808B Plus, MINIX X8-H Plus, Tronsmart Orion R68

To get r89 to connect try it the other way around:
- Connect the OTG cable to computer and R89
- Press the Button in the AV connector
- Plug in the PSU
Make sure to have the drivers updated.
