No GPS, "location" based upon wifi and other information.

Also, I notice that Location Services is not working - is this something that somebody would be able to advise on. This seems strange as when I use the map on the "Latitude" app, it has pinpointed me dead on!
Of course location services doesn't work. The tablet doesn't have GPS and even though it requires Wifi for a data connection, it has no ability to locate itself using just a wifi network (although you have to tell it to use wifi in Security settings). If you want to use Maps (and I do), you'll need to manually enter information, but you won't be able to use the tablet to navigate (although it would be cool if you could.)

Location Services - wifi only without GPS

I am just responding re an earlier message. My point was that I have another android tablet (Ployer Momo) as well as an Ipod Touch and Ipad. None of these have GPS built in and each will find my location - even when my own wifi is turned off or out of signal. I think the way it works is by picking up nearby wifi signals, even locked ones and thereby triangulates your position - which can be used on your non-connected machine eg Maps, Weather and other apps. I often try this when out and about as it can find my position even when you are nowhere near a hotspot as long as your equipment can pick up at least 3 wifi signals.

My point was that this is not currently working on the Arnova 10 2g - I think I spotted another thread on this site -can't find it at the moment and I believe Bob is looking into it when he gets some time.

Big thanks to Damo for making me a cool boot screen. I hope you like it.

          Features:
          1) Google Market latest version 3.4.4 pre-installed and ready to use!
This includes a working Google Calendar and Contacts sync.
Also includes Google Gmail, and News / Weather. All of these are up to date!
No post updates required for Google apps for now until Google updates them.
          2) 1GB off app install space (the max possible). Stock ROM only has 255mb
Testers are saying the system is MUCH faster now
          3) Full root as /system was converted from Cramfs to EXT3 file system PROPERLY BLOCKED!
          4) Added space in /system to allow "root" apps to install there (200 megs)
          5) Latest up to date SU and Superuser.apk installed
          6) Root permissions granted
          7) ADB and USB debugging enabled by default
          8) 3G USB stick support added.

          Notes:
          1) This is for the Arnova 10 G2 ONLY. Do not try to use this on any other model like the 10b G2, etc. You will brick your tablet otherwise. Stay tuned I will be releasing ROMs for the other Arnova’s soon!

          2) If you have never flashed one of my ROMs before, you cannot just copy files over to the SDCard. You must use the flashing tool I provide in my ROM kit. No exceptions. This will require you to install drivers on your PC. In my kit I have tested and supplied drivers for Win32 and 64.

          3) This ROM has been tested by others so we know it works.

          4) Market issues. Market issue "may" still exist. This is common on tablets that are not really supported by Google as a registered device. Most users have no issues but sometimes there can be, The 2 issues that seem to arise when your FIRST TIME try to use the Market are:

          A) Cannot logon; "Cannot establish a reliable data connection"
I have tried to recreate this and troubleshoot this. My belief if in fact this happens sometimes when Google servers are doing something or something is going on with them. WHen I had this happen once I simply waited a while and it worked later. So I cannot help too much here. My only suggestion to try is this
          a) Install a root file manager like root explorer or ES file manager (enable root access for them)
          b) Go in with the file manager and delete /data/misc/imei/imei or data.dat which ever one exists

          B) Limited apps listed; I have reproduced this and know how to recreate it and fix it! This has to do (I beleive) that after a factory reset or a flash the tablet creates a ID based on some other IDs and a random key generator. Sometimes this ID Google does not like. So we have to clear that and reboot.
YOU DO NOT EVER NEED TO REFLASH OR DO A FACOTRY RESET TO FIX THIS!!!!
          DO the following
          a) Again using a file manager that has root access go in and delete the follow folders from the /data/data directory.
          com.android.vending (not com.applib.vending!)
          com.android.vending.updater
          com.google.android.gm
          com.google.android.gsf
          b) Reboot and do nothing else but run the Market. YOu should get a prompt asking you to accept the Google terms of service. If you did not you did something wrong. Do it again. If you do get the prompt, accept and now the Market should work fully with TONS of apps showing up.

OK so thats it.... I hope you enjoy my new ROM. Please feel free to give feedback, etc.

Here is the download from OUR local server! No pop ups, adds, SPAM. etc... That’s why we built this place. ROMs should be easily accessed with no BS.

Only possible if Arnova update the device to ICS or if some Rom cooker would have the ability to write ICS for the Arnova(Hell of a lot of work)

Although perfectly capable, probably not in the near future

Have you tried to delete the unknown device from device manager, than re-plug your tablet back in and repeat the steps?

<QUOTE>Downloaded Arnova 10 G2 Custom ROM by Finless Version 1.3
and followed the instructions up the point of installing the win7 32bit driver but keep getting message that "The folder you specified doesn't containa compatible driver for your device." Have Win7 Ultimate 32bit.
My tablet is totally bricked. Can any one help? </QUOTE>
                Carrowniskey,
Don't know if this will help, but I can sense the frustration. If you've tried with different verisons of Windows, then I'd guess either the steps to put the tablet into the right mode are wrong... I thought I had a faulty one until I checked the instructions really, really carefully.
I noticed that when I did this with XP, I got a similar error message because I was trying to update the drivers for the card storage. I had not actually put the tablet into the right mode - I thought I'd followed instructions but was deceiving myself.
I had to make sure I followed the volume up button & reset hole method exactly right. Then, at the top of the Devices list, the correct device appeared and accepted the driver.

as has been mentioned location wont work due to lack of GPS, however i do believe finless new rom has the option to add a GPS USB dongle if this is a must have for you.
skype version 2.0.0.47 works for me on the 10G2 w/ audio & video .
should u have any problem locating that older build, pm me an email addy and i be glad to forward it.
                  good luck

                    Can't load drivers

Thank you for your suggestions but still cannot get Win7 32bit to recognise drivers. I followed the instructions to put it into recovery mode and I also tried uninstalling "unknown device" from the Divice Manager but I still keep getting the same message
"...folder doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver make sure it is designed to work with Windows for 32 bit systems"
I have have downloaded the update image from arnovatech.com but will I have to load drivers for this as well?
This i driving me nuts as I really found the arnova top class

                      Very fustrating for you.

Have you tried it on a different computer than you own?

And have you got any usb 3 ports on the computer that you are doing it on, if you have than it needs to be done on a usb 2 port.

Thank you for your reply. Yes I have tried it on a Win7 64bit and Win7 32bit PC and a XP laptop all of which have only usb 2 ports. I get the same result on all three.

In device manager when you get the unknown device have you opened it and tried to install the drivers from within device manager on that particular device? Want me to take some screen caps of what it should look like and where I am talking about on XP. I use a MacBook Pro and Bootcamp to boot into XP as my PC is dead and I have not gotten a replacement yet and it works fine. Driver install the first time I had to do it manually from within device manager.

Interesting. That is exactly how i was able to load the drivers on my XP Installation. I had to do it manually just like you are describing, but it worked on XP 32bit.

That sounds good. If not we could s et up a remote connection between your computer and another with a program called team player, than we could
Re create the steps you are doing remotly. Just have the firmware folder on your desktop so it is easy to find. Up to you
