Seems very expensive for what it does, bet it will be launched close to £175 or more, which makes me wonder who would be buying it.

Streaming PC games from nVidia cards is working tremendously well on something like a £20 mk808b plus with moonlight (you will need an an ethernet adapter or a decent 5ghz android device), with full 360 controller support.

I dunno, seems like a tough sell to me.
    Currently Using:
2 x Nvidia Shield TV | MiniMX III
    Retired Devices:
    MiniMX III-II | Mk808b Pro | Mk808b Plus | Raspberry Pi 1 + 2 | UBOX R89 | MK808 | MK808b | CS008 | X1 4K (rk3288_809) | CYX_809III | Ouya | CX-919 | S82 Plus | Tronstmart R68

And rightly so, best support Ive ever seen (3 updates in a month), 3GB of ram, CPU/GPU that scores 70+k in Antutu, 4K Netflix, Rechargeable gamepad that works out of the box with no half assed controller support, dual band 802.11ac wifi, GB ethernet (built in), USB 3.0 x2, GRID game streaming, Gamestream game streaming. The list goes on really, I would be interested in seeing what people think is the closes competitor and lets stack em up against each other and see what the difference in price really accounts for lol

Agreed, there's a MASSIVE difference between the Chinese Android boxes and the Shield . The Shield is head and shoulders above any of the competition at the moment. I'd quite happily pay (and I have) the extra money for the Shield that has support and actually works properly over all the other poorly supported Rockchip, Amlogic Android boxes I've bought in the past and havent done what they said they would.

A small PC? Steambox style? As you could build one which would trash it at that price.

It better be well supported, since it's the price of 8 x mk808b plus'. I can see the market for it, but man, that's a great deal just to play some video files on.

I think the Shield is cheap. My R89 was $150 and my MINIX X8 was $160. Both are very poor compared to the Shield. If I'd had the Shield before I wouldn't have wasted my money on the others. It's the perfect box for my 4k TV, it whizzes through 4k videos, games etc with ease.

I appreciate the opinions of everyone here about the news new Shield, I am on the fence about purchasing one.. I will probably probably wait a few months before making a decision.

I thought I saw a fan inside. If so, is it audible?

You're aware that SOC's are weaker than old desktop and laptop CPU's right? So some quad cores running at 1.6ghz lose to a single pentium.

An old core 2 duo would be much faster, a £30 q6600 would utterly thrash the hell out it. The GPU again cannot be compared to a cheap desktop one, you would know this if you looked at the specs.

If you would like to me list a machine however I am more than happy to do that, but its still an expensive media centre and a poor gaming platform, as I believe Android is a poor gaming platform full stop, bar emulation. I'm not knocking your purchase as you're happy with it and a PC would use considerably more power, I'm just giving my view. It's no doubt worth it to people who need say 4k Netflix on a small device, question is how many need that, and will there be much cheaper alternatives very soon produced from the likes of Amazon ect.

I think it's more you've got burnt with Chinese devices and are willing to invest more in a hassle free platform, which is understandable, but nVidia do overcharge on anything they produce. Everyone got all excited about the 970 GPU, because it's the first time in years nVidia have launched something that was actually good value.

I see what you mean now, a PC with all second hand parts. Not personally interested, but there are def bargains to be had on **** and craigslist so a used build is def doable for < 200. I also saw some open box Shield TVs being sold used on Amazon for approx 165 so in terms of used pricing that would be a fairer # to compare with (not that 35 dollars makes much of a diff). As far as native android gaming though, I think the shield tv does have the ability but Nvidia is really positioning it as client 'PC' of sorts for game streaming with GRID or game stream. Based off of what you said earlier about it working fine on the mK808b if thats the case then would there really be noticeable difference in performance between an older intel pc and the x1 since they both kick the shit out of the mali 400 and all of the heavy lifting is really being done by the 'server' pc?

The nVidia stream tech is highly dependent on how quickly the GPU on the client can decode h264 video and if it supports 60fps decoding, the CPU plays very little part. The Mali 450 is not really suited to gaming, but is more than capable at video so streaming works fine.
