I just want to say I'm a massive hypocrite and have purchased one from the US.

I still think it's a hard sell on the mainstream however, definitely wouldn't use it just as a media box.
    Currently Using:
2 x Nvidia Shield TV | MiniMX III
    Retired Devices:
    MiniMX III-II | Mk808b Pro | Mk808b Plus | Raspberry Pi 1 + 2 | UBOX R89 | MK808 | MK808b | CS008 | X1 4K (rk3288_809) | CYX_809III | Ouya | CX-919 | S82 Plus | Tronstmart R68

            Ouch, that's a mistake. I've had both.

Minix was always better with firmware but with the new RK3288/RK3688 boxes, they are cheaper and more powerful than the AMLogic ones they sell.

What can you do with the Shield that you can't do with the Amlogic S812 boxes. I also have one of the new RK3688 that will be shipping tomorrow, I hope. I got the Tronsmart Orion R68 Meta for $50 when it was on sale for 50% off.

I have had the Google Developers kit the ADT-1 for a long time, and I rarely use it, my other Android boxes work better for me.

Strangely enough, on some of the other forums that I read, people say not to purchase the Shield, instead purchase a chromebox, or a mini PC for roughly the same price.

Agreed. The Amlogic chips are horrible, overheating and throttling. The 3288 is more powerful and cooler. I've been trying Wassers Lollipop Rom on my R89*and it's good so far.

I would say if you have a 4k (I have) display you can forget using the Amlogic or Rk3288 boxes with it, they're just not powerful enough. The Shield can run 4k with ease. I also had video stuttering with the Amlogic and Rk3288 on 1080p(havent fully tested it yet with Wassers Lollipop Rom). With the Shield I've had none. The shield also powers through games where I had trouble with the Amlogic and Rk3288. Game streaming is also really great using Nvidias hub.
I guess if you want a more AOSP experience then the Chinese boxes are better(Vs Android TV) but I'd stay well away from Amlogic (this gen) and go more towards the Rk3288 (haven't tried Rk3688 yet) with the proviso that you'll really have to tinker and use custom Roms with it. The shield just powers through Games, any Videos I've thrown at it, it has full HD Netflix (Chinese boxes dont) Shield Hub Game streaming etc with ease as it's super powerful but has the disadvantage of Android TV and sideloading apps.

It can't be touched in terms of raw power under the hood, the thing is emulating some wii/gamecube/psp games at full speed with unoptimised emulators, it's borderline ridiculous how powerful it is. It feels very much like a laptop in a very slim box, with a dedicated GPU - hence why the PSU is 19 volts.

Crysis 3 is being released for it soon to run natively, it's a huge step up from anything in the market tbh.

Video playback is flawless as expected, but I absolutely would not recommend it as a dedicated media machine, total waste of money when some cheap boxes can do that. (not the rk3288)

At the moment it's the only box I've tried that can handle true 4k media is the Shield. 1080 you can use the cheaper Chinese boxes.

I don't game and no 4k TV, all my movie rips are from DVD's no blueray rips. True Netflix is only DVD quality, but I don't notice any difference. I can watch Netflix in HD on my PS3 or my ADT-1. I really don't like my ADT-1, and I am assuming it is very similar to the Shield.

Here is my video I made almost a year ago, showing my ADT-1.

will probably purchase the Shield down the road.

All right had mine long eough to provide a review. Yes Nvidia is the fastest box out there, but some major draw back. As they stated its a open system.(lean back) but the hardware is NOT its closed and not open for devs to play with and or worst part hurts devs when building roms. Now Lean back ??why would they stick with that even after th adt1 and forum responses and test groups is beond me. getting a browser to work was imposible for those not used to lean back. poor system for those that want thier own desk top or any type of customization even to get wallpapers of your own you have to launch a different progam. lets not even get into play store paid apps 34 tested none avalible on the shield. Side loading isnt the greats eventure either.... want strickly point click play some games great device. Best out there Not really seeing that it is all that. better boxes out there allowing deul boot and more rom options. The shield system wont change any time soon as only way for a change to system will come from Nvdia. They should have gone full lollipop and emagine how fast it would have been then selling mine as i like to do my own thing and have it my way

Thanks for that review. I struggled with the decision of which device to purchase, the Nvida shield or MINIX X8-H Plus, I went with the MINIX. I have the Google developers box, ADT-1, I could not get used to the lean back interface. I am like you, I want it my way, not locked into someone else's idea on how I should use their hardware.
