Once an OTA update has been installed, if for some reason a full hard reset is required, It will remove all your data stuff but it would leave you on the new firmware not take you back to the older firmware.

If for some reason you wanted to go back to how it was shipped you would need to install the older firmware using a pc or a SD card (not too hard to do)

A hard reset would remove root but not to worry about that as its a 1min job to root with Bobs root zip honest he has made it to be fool proof.

      Thanks again blinkone....

So am I correct in saying Bobs ez root will work for lifetime of this device ( Assuming it stays on 5.1 Lollipop OS )?
If they were to change the increment to 5.2, will a new root be needed?
If and when they ever decide to go to Marshmallow, will a new root be needed?

Lastly Sir, if you have it, ...could you please provide a link for the pre-installed version of the default vidon Kodi version apk ?( rather than perform a hard reset, in case it were ever to become corrupt / deleted)

      Thank you.

Nice to see that there is a rom incoming. Hoping for touch screen support.

Tried to hook my good old iiyama T2250MTS up to the Vega S95 by using following method but I could not get it to work...
Would it have anything to do with the kernel or kernel modules ?

        Adding file Vendor_0408_Product_3001.idc to /system/usr/idc/Vendor

        http://freaktab.com/filedata/fetch?i...4&d=1351462387

        su
        chown root /system/usr/idc/Vendor_0408_Product_3001.idc
        chmod 06755 /system/usr/idc/Vendor_0408_Product_3001.idc

It worked on my CX-919 though...

I followed the EZ root instructions but it didn't work. The system reboots but instead of installing the update, it displays an error (see 1st attached image). Then I'll select ezroot.zip inside udisk, and I get second error (2nd attached image). Any ideas on how to fix it?

I have a Tronsmart S95 Meta and just did a system update (to Version 20160119).

          Error message from screenshot:
          Code:

          Opening update package...

          Secure check failed.

          Installation aborted.
OTA failed! Please power off the device to keep it in this state and file a bug report!

Hello, I also have the Meta. It is rooted post update. Out of curiosity, I used the Android Terminal Emulator to run Finless Bob's EZ root Zip. But the regular method should work. BTW I flashed the update from the PC, did not use OTA.

For me rooting failed pre and post update, so I don't think the update had anything to do with it.

Please provide instructions on how you used Android Terminal Emulator to run the zip. I don't know the steps.

It does not do anything different than using the Backup and Update app.
Extract the three files in Bob's zip to the root of an SD card, rename ezroot.zip to update.zip and insert the card in the S95.
Activate developer options @Settings/About Media Box/ click build number 5 times. It will say you are now a developer. Back out to Settings and you will see a new settings category, Developer Options. In Developer Options, turn on USB debugging.
Install the Terminal Emulator for Android and open it.
Type in "adb reboot update" and enter, a permission dialog popup will appear, allow it. If the box does not reboot, enter "adb reboot update" again and enter. The box should reboot. If successful, the box will reboot to the Android animation with a progress bar. Upon completion, the box should boot to a rooted state.
Of course, as with all flashing, updating or mods, the user does so at their own risk. I have done this a couple of times and experienced no issues.
                Good luck.

                  Hi sidiw

Did your attempt brick the device... or could you still do a hard reset and reboot to factory state?

                  Thanks.

                    My device is rooted!

I followed the instructions by RISCy Dude above and it didn't work for me, after the box rebooted I still got the error with failing to mount /udisk. Then I navigated to udisk and selected update.zip. It rooted my device.

Glad you got it rooted, sorry the method I posted did not work for you. I don't know why, as I used it again last night, and again had no issues. Still, glad your're rooted.
I hope Finless' EZ root Zip will one day root the Remix OS too.
                      Cheers.

So thanks to Trebor for testing my EZ root ZIP I made for the Minix U1, this also work on all the Tronsmart S95 devices.

No ADB required which is difficult for many to setup and get the drivers installed!

Trust I will do more work with the S95 boxes like ROMS!

                          ________________________

This is a full proper root including fixing processes!
When you run the SU app for the first time you it will not have to update the SU binary which is unlike other root tools out there for the S905.

                          On with the show.....

                          Download the link below.

Unzip the file and put the 3 files on a SDcard.
                          ezroot.zip
                          recovery.img
                          factory_update_param.aml

Insert the SDcard into your Tronsmart S95
Unplug the power, wait 3 seconds and plug it back in.

Now this is the important part. We need to boot the recovery you put on SDcard not the internal recovery or the ezroot.zip will fail signature.

Go to "My Apps" and run "Update & Backup".
Click on "Local Update" and click on "Select". It should find ezroot.zip on your SDcard.
                          Select that and proceed.

The S95 will reboot and install the update and your done!

                          Enjoy the perfect root

                          Here is the download link:

                          https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9B...ew?usp=sharing

Enjoy and now it is time for me to work on a Finless ROM for this box

                          Bob
Thank you for creating this Root method for the S905, maybe you should update post to include the K1 Plus TV box. It had a very different way to get root with your zip file... Had to install from within the k1 built in recovery, update from EXT Option, Using a USB SdCard reader... Would not read from TF slot... Nor work from your original instructions from 1st post using the Update BackUp App... Thanks... Any idea if an unofficial OpenElec build will come for our Amlogic S905 chipset Android Box.. Specifically the K1 Plus... Or a Custom Rom.... Peace!!!

Usually when the box bricked, last resource to try is to flash stock firmware via burning tool. Need a pc, usb cable connecting the box to pc.
You should check with the manufacture for instruction and tool for flashing firmware.
                              Good luck

                                Hey Bob,

Worked great on my Tronsmart Telos, done in under a minute!

I used a on old 4GB class 2 SD card formatted with FAT32 at the default Windows allocation size and it didn't cause any problems.
