I thought RK3399 is using Mali-T860MP GPU. No?

Yes. It's just a typo that needs correcting on the Gearbest site.

More on the RK3399 from CNXSoft

Rockchip RK3399 hexa-core processor with ARM Cortex A72 and A53 cores and a Mali-T860MP GPU will soon be found in TV boxes, development boards, tablets, Chromebooks, virtual reality headset and more, and is widely expected to offer a significant performance boost against previous Rockchip processors, including RK3288, and outperform SoCs from competitors like Amlogic and Allwinner.

We can have a first clue about the performance as Rockchip RK3399 boxes and one tablet are now showing up onGeekBench.

          rk3399-benchmarks

The box is clocked at 1512 MHz, while the tablet is limited to 1416 MHz, but overall single-core score is about 1350 points, while multi-core score hovers around 2,550 points. I’m not that familiar with GeekBench so number don’t tell me anything. Let’s compare it against RK3288 which CPU-wise is the fastest processor I known of from Chinese silicon vendors targeting TV boxes.

          rk3399-vs-rk3288

There’s a significant single-core performance boost (+73%), and lower multi-core delta (+30%) as expected since RK3399 has 2 fast Cortex A72 cores, 4 low power Cortex-A53 cores, against 4 fast Cortex-A17 cores for RK3288. If you look into the details AES is over 10 times faster on RK3399, so there must be some special instructions used here, or AES hardware acceleration.

Rockchip RK3399 “reference” TV box also has 4GB RAM, so I’m expecting RK3399 devices to come with 2 and 4 GB versions.
          RK3399 vs Tegra K1
          RK3399 vs Tegra K1

Rockchip RK3399 is also faster than Nvidia Tegra K1 quad core Cortex A15 @ 2.2 GHz for single thread performance, and about equivalent for multi-core tests.

[Update: I also found GFXBench 3D graphics results for RK3399, and compared it to Nvidia Tegra K1.

rk3399-gpu-benchmarkThe Mali-T860MP used in RK3399 is still far from the performance delivered by the Kepler GPU in Tegra K1.

Now if I compare the results to RK3288 (Mali-T764 GPU) based Ugoos UT3s TV box, the score on RK3399 (Mali-T860MP4) is also lower.

          rk3399-vs-rk3288-gpu

We’ll have to wait and see here, as we don’t know at which frequency the GPU is running. Both GPUs are supposed to have the same performance according to Wikipedia.]

There seems to be some confusion about exactly what the CPU runs at.

Advertising says 2Ghz, CNX says 1.5Ghz and I saw another spec for the Firefly talk of 1.8Ghz.

Prob 1.8Ghz as the Firefly uses the reference board. Can achieve around 75,000 points in Antutu

Its a really interesting chipset as quite a lot of the grunt is in the processor rather than the GPU.
Throw in the Sata & 4GB Ram and the questions are Linux, Chromium OS or Android.
The Linux support is going to be really good, relative to some other chipsets and we might see these in many guises.
I want one and thinking about an early release, which I usually wait for a while, for things to settle with firmware and price, but I must admit I am excited about a sweet spot where actually we are talking home servers for an initial £90 that are likely to drop with economies of sale.

Really interested if anyone is gearing up for a straight linux ROM as Nextcloud/OpenWrt/Kodi boxes could be quite interesting, already have a 4 disk Sata III port multiplier box lined up for one of these.
Dunno if I am going to bother with Android or not.

Any workaround for digital audio passthrough?

Lets have a bit of a look see

                        Whats in the Box

                        Front no Led Clock/Display.

Ports, SD, USB3 and USB Type-C

Ports: Power, Digital, R, LAN, HDMI, USB2, Vents noted

                        Underside PCB not much happening

Even more exciting the plastic base and Vents

Top SIde PCB, You can also note the heat pad not getting much use by indentations

                        Most important Bit.

Closer look Wifi Antennae & Small PCB Power Switch, LED and IR pickup

Heat Sink not fitted to well to much pad and riding up.

                        Ports again

And a closer looks at the rest of the bits that make it happen.

                        Wifi Chip

                        eMMC

                        Ram

                        Power Management Chip

                        Ethernet Chip

I have trimmed the heat Pad under heatsink now it sits flush to CPU
I also added some 5mm pad to the Case Lid Metal plate to give better heat dissipation.
Not sure if it was needed but while in bits Just Do it.

                        More to Come

                        Again Thanks to Gearbest

Well interesting box indeed this Yundoo Y8...
Boot time from power on around 7 seconds so very quick.
Power button on the front that works and just a Red off Blue on LED

Antutu 77500K so not to shabby
Yundoo Y8 is looking pretty good with UI and Performance Snappy.

I can feel a bit of heat on the lid so I would say the added Thicker thermal pad is doing Good.
Idle temps in the Hi 40c under stress with 3DMark around 70c

Using CPU Temp Pure to monitor temps only as a guide, I can see temps Rise and fall very quick.
On the Media players it just seems to go High and Stay there.
This will peak 70c then drop down again to 60 and bounce in between. so cool down time appears quick.
But as mentioned only a guide.

We also have upper and lower task/notification bar
                          Root is available.

As you will see below there are some Impressive Benchmark score so far so good box is showing signs of
being a good and capable unit and can only get better from here.

Netflix was OK looked good, BT, WiFI, Ethernet all good at this location

Will do some basic Kodi testing but as most it will be good in some area and fail in others as most Units do Today
Its installed with TVMC just another in the many using Kodi 16.1 as the base and fancy backgrounds etc.

                          But looking good.

                          Again Thanks to Gearbest
