    New PMID701i owner

Just purchased this @ Big Lots for $99 - then I quickly broke it... :-(

I was messing with installing Market and I did something wrong so that every time I booted, the one-time setup came up. Problem is, as soon as I would touch the Android guym it would crash and restart! So, I was basically stuck... So, I called the company this morning to try and get the firmware image. I explained that my son had changed the PIN and I was locked out. He told me that the firmware "update" is not available yet. I said that's fine, I don't want an update, I want the current version. He kept saying that it wasn't available yet and that I was basically stuck. He said it "should" be out by the end of the week (hmm, where did we hear that before??).

I asked for a manager at this point, which he transferred me to someones voice mail. I left a message expressing my dissatisfaction. Even their own web site says that you can obtain the image if you lock yourself out! What BS - that's terrible support - I guess what do you expect for a $99 tablet, but it just makes no sense - obviously, the image exists since it was running on the tablet when I got it!

I'll keep you posted if I get anywhere (but I don't think I will). In the meantime, I installed the Onda V1 firmware, and it seems to be running fine...

What is the diff between Onda V1 and V5??

    Thanks!

EDIT: Got a call back from the "manager" who said that the deivce has only been on the market for 2 days and that the firmware is simpe not available until the end of the week (hopefully she said)... What BS. I may take this back just on principal at this point...

Realistically the biggest difference I have noticed with the V1 and V5 is how the screen is oriented. So if you didn't need to lock the screen to be able to see it right side up then you are fine with the V1

Funny, I've had 2 of the 701i's since early April one bought on 4-11 the other on 4-12. Also I returned the 1st one because of WiFi issues on the 14th and they had a cabinet with about 5 of them in there still. So I'd say that's the longest 2 days ever!

Customer support giving the usual spin.

Lol..yeah via email they were also promising firmware updates/images to be released on their support site 4 days ago. Pretty odd for this product that supposedly was released 2 days ago.

Yeah, when I said "well, you've been telling people the end of the week for 2 weeks now", that's when she said that if anyone had the tablet before 2 days ago, they shouldn't have...

Regardless, it is absolutely bad business to release a product with no way to get back to where you started. Especially when the FAQ on THEIR website says that it's available if you lock yourself out! I was p*ssed. I told her that they need to update their web site then becuase it's very in-accurate!!

Let's see. *YOU* broke something installing something you really had no business installing and you're saying what some manager told you is BS because you basically got told the truth, and not what you wanted to hear.

              *Sigh*

Regardless of the reason I need the firmware, it should be available. If I truly had locked myslef out (by forgetting the PIN), I would still be stuck...

Plus, their OWN website says it's available...

Most apps unavailable in Play Store?

After loading the Onda firmware, it seems that the Market only sees very few apps (for example, I don't see any Angry Birds free versions excpet for one). HD WIdgets says not compatible, etc.. I tried taking a build.prop for another A10 tablet that sees all apps, but even that didn't help!

                  Any ideas?

                  Thanks!

                    Google Play

In your setting, check the allow updates from google and give the unit time to update itself. Many of the problems people are having is trying to force the unit before it has had the opportunity to do what the OS does best if left alone.

Hmm, I'm a little confused by that post... The tablet has been running for hours - it updated to play store, but there are a lof of apps that say theyare incompatible (angry birds free, HD widgets, etc).

But apparently they feel it's not ready to be released going from what they said to you. I noticed that that they yanked an updated rom for the PMID700 and PTAB7200 tablets on the site with this message:
Note: If you have installed version 2.5 and are experiencing any issues, please revert back to version 2.4
Version 2.5 is no longer available.

Quite frankly I prefer this approach. If something's not right with it don't release it just to release something.

You are missing the point - I don't want an UPDATE - I want the existing version that come on the device, which they obviously have available sinec it was already installed on my device when I got it...

Actually, I've seen this kind of thing before. That's why certain New Release DVD's for instance have dates before which they can't be placed on the store shelves printed on the boxes when they are received in the shipping depts in stores like Walmart,Target and Kmart or the stores can get fined for it.

Yeah, it sure sounds like Big Lots let the cat out of the bag a little early... :-)

If that's the case, then I feel a little better that the firmware will actually be available soon then...

Honestly I'm 90% convinced it is customer support blowing smoke up your rear. Let's play devil's advocate and suppose for some mysterious reasons numerous Big Lots stores in my region mysteriously decided to release (and advertise) a tablet that wasn't supposed to be on shelves yet (the 701i). That still doesn't explain why they STILL don't have any firmware support available for 701C users. THAT tablet has been out since mid to late March.

Again, we aren't talking about UPDATES..we are talking about EXISTING factory default firmware that ships on the tablet. No matter what lame excuses customer support tells you, they shouldn't ship and release products they aren't prepared to support with minimal support like the methods to restore to factory firmware they discuss in their support documentation.

Most of us perfectly understand working out kinks on improvements and updgrades. I emailed support inquiring about an upgrade to ICS for those of us who bought the 701c. I was told it will eventually happen but I'll have to wait until it's ready in 2 weeks or more. Although I don't really want to wait...I realize something like that takes time. However....it shouldn't take that much time to get a customer a restore image to revert back to the way the thing was out of the box.
