    Pipo M9 Pro - Finless 1.4 ROM

    Hi folks!
It's been a while since I did a ROM for a tablet. Been working on all the TV sticks. But I got this tablet recently and decided to have a go at a ROM. Thanks top Randy for getting me up to speed on Pipo things

Anyway here is my first ROM for the Pipo M9 Pro. It was made using the latest M9 Pro ROM from Pipo.

    __________________________________

Features and release notes for my 1.4 ROM:

    1) Rooted and new SU and Superuser applied that supports Android 4.2.2

    2) 4 parameter files available to repartition NAND space (see below instructions).

    3) As always, full init.d support! If you do not know what that is... ignore it. For geeks that want to use it. It is there!

    4) All google required APPs updated to the latest version as of this ROM build.
This includes the play store and other required Google CORE and APPs.
Stock ROM had a very old Play Store and GMS Core.
Nothing worse that blogging up your brand new ROM with required Google updates!

    5) I modified the stock launcher. This M9 Pro has a high def screen. Why not use more space.
I made the APP Drawer 8 icons wide instead of 7. This also gives more columns to the desktop.
I also PROPERLY removed the search bar on the desktop by editing the launcher.
This is the correct way to do it rather then deleting the APK which can cause stability problems.

    6) Replaced the stupid provision service on first boot trying to install Pipo junk apps.

    7) Build.prop edit to open up the Google Play store to APPs that normally say "not compatible".
I am spoofing a Samsung device that will show almost any APP as compatible.
Your device will show up in google play as Samsung device not a Pipo!
    Understand this please.
I also left the original build.prop in the ROM called build.orig.
If you want to go back, just use ES FIle Explorer or a root file explorer and rename build.prop to build.old
    Then rename build.orig to build.prop.
Go into settings, apps, all and go into the Google Play app. Clear the cache and data.
Reboot! You should be back to showing up as a Pipo.

    8) I give you a choice of boot.img's.
One for wifi only and one to support 3G. This should help performance for those that have only Wifi.
The Wifi boot.img is setup as the default in the flash tool!
If you have 3G you must use the boot3g.img. See below for instructions on changing that.

    9) Of course as always I debloated the ROM of Apps!
Starting with a clean ROM is important depending on what you want to use your M9 for.
Why have APPs burning resources if you never use them?
I also found some hidden APPs and removed those.
I also removed all the other junk launchers

    10) I did some wifi tuning. Power is increased and for me this makes wifi work better!
However, it may cause slightly more battery drain but I have not noticed it.
If you want to edit it back, I can tell you how using ES File Explorer.

    11) Other system tuning, file system tuning, etc I do to all my ROMs.

    12) I added a reboot APP that will allow optional reboot options like reboot to bootloader (flash mode).
Use this to easily get into flash mode to change boot.img's or later kernels!

                Pipo M9 Pro - Finless 1.4 ROM

                Thanks for the ROM!

How about multiuser? Already activated? Or do we have to put the 2 Lines for multiuser in the build.prop? (and no more need for deleting the provision.apk, right?)

                Thanks a lot!

Multiuser is enabled, but it has the same issue with wallpaper if you aren't user 1 that I first noticed with RileyROM 2.1 (live wallpaper only on user 2+). Since I hadn't done much work with Fin 1.4 yet, I reflashed
                  update_M9pro_OTA_1.0.7_20131120.img
and as supplied by PiPo, that wallpaper issue came from the stock rom.

Item 6) in the first post mentions that provision. service is already toast - but I do find /system/app/provision.apk present. Maybe something else is done here, but the 2nd user doesn't have issues as previously with provision.apk still present.

Busybox is more messed up than RileyROM, but I'm accustomed to installing one from Play Store or restore of a backup.

You cannot delete the provision service or it messes up the system. I used a provision service from another ROM that does not try to install junk and works properly.

Multi-user is what it is.... Google has not fixed it nor has RockChip.

I do not install busybox only a "lite" version. Many don't need it so why bloat the ROM. It's easy for people to install whatever version they want from Google Play.

Few users would need / want busybox - I just happen to be one that does do
                      telnet xx.domain.com
and the "lite" version is built with a static library (I forget details) and doesn't support DNS to IP address for any function.

1.4 has /system/bin/busybox from the stock rom
                      F:\PIPO\RK3188_ROOT>adb shell ls -l /system/bin/busy*
                      -rwxr-xr-x root shell 1807056 2013-11-19 22:13 busybox

                      and your "lite"
                      F:\PIPO\RK3188_ROOT>adb shell ls -l /system/xbin/busy*
                      -rwxr-xr-x root shell 481092 2011-11-26 00:22 busybox

                      Once I installed
                      F:\PIPO\RK3188_ROOT>adb shell ls -l /system/xbin/busy*
                      -rwxr-xr-x root root 822080 2013-12-03 19:17 busybox
I could THEN delete the 1.8M stock version and save 1.4M space (and DNS works).

Multiuser has many issues, but wallpaper for user 2 was working on every RileyROM I tried before 2.1 as well as previous PiPo stock roms. Not the end of the world, for sure.

                        Recovery?

Does this use the same method of installing cwm recovery as rileyrom2.1?

                          3G battery waste solved!

Ummm I just have to say that I am pretty sure I have solved the 3G battery waste on a wifi only tablet.

Mine has now been in standby for 2 days and battery says 98%
Nothing is being reported as battery use for 3G.

This is awesome for me as a wifi only tablet M9 Pro!

FYI it appears the boost in wifi power I added to my ROM has not hurt battery performance in any measurable way...... Yet for me, wifi is much better!

You'll have to share that magic with me on that one.

The M6 and M6 Pro tabs could use the same mod. My M7 Pro wifi already rocks pretty well.

                              Feedback on 1.4 ROM

                              Hi Bob,
Thanks for your ROM - nice work.

Out of sheer curiosity I sent my Riley Rom 2.1 on vacation (sorry Randy)and flashed your 1.4 last night, straight on the highway - no issues whatsoever.
Of the little testing that I have done so far I noticed almost instantly a couple of things comparing with Riley's 2.1:
                              + WiFi strength is improved
                              + Somehow smoother screen shifts
                              + faster Google Shop communication
                              - AnTuTu dropped slightly from 18627 to 18170 (which does not buzzer me...)
                              - The old issue of the unit restarting by itself once in a while from sleep state is still there ...

More is yet to be tested.
                              Thanks again
                              /Kastrup
