    CWM recovery for rk3066 devices.

NOTE: If your stick comes with a 4.2 rom, rename the zip to update.zip will not work in most cases, bad compatibility between the new stock recovery and the zip. So I suggest you to use other way to install cwm.

Someone ask me how to install cwm recovery for mk808b.So will try to explain what is and how to install this fantastic and usefull tool for almost all rk3066 devices.

First of all, i will try to explain it clear, step by step. It works for me very well, is very simple and usefull. But if you brick your device (androids tv sticks with rk3066 are almost unbrikables) pls dont complain to me, i will try to help you to unbrick them, but is your responsability flash anything in your device.

All credits for fun (xda-developer) and cwm recovery developement team, he makes a port to this tool for our devices.

You can follow fun work in:

    What is cwm recovery?

Is a recovery image that let us to make backups and restore of our actual firmware with all our applications installed, it makes a mirrored copy of our system. Very usefull if you want to try install new roms and after test it you want to come back at the state you had before. Or if you get a corrupted nand issue.
You can too install roms in cwm zip format (not available anyone by the moment) without use any external pc so simply, you copy the zip to the sdcard and flash it from cwm recovery.
This tool have more functionality like clear data, clear cache, mount and unmount filesystem, format them, etc...
YOU DONT NEED TO BE ROOT TO INSTALL CWM RECOVERY IN YOUR SYSTEM. So you can use it to make a backup of the stock rom.

Where can i get this tool?

A lot of images maked by fun for our specific devices and one generic image for the unsupported devices. Only get our specific device and download it.

    How to install it?

Is vey simple, if you are in the stock firmware or any stock rom based in only need to rename cwm.zip to update.zip and copy it to our sdcard, the system will boot and tell us that it find an update, answer yes to install it. The original restore image will be backup in our sd, and the new one will be installed.
You can too install it from cwm (useful in case of recovery update), by adb from a pc, or by rkflashtool made by our friend Bob. In the link above fun explains how install it in each situation.

A very good explication by MhagnumDw with other method to install it, I correct only 1 point :

tork, if you installed the Finless ROM 1.7, so I'll assume you know how to do get into flash mode and also know other things.
    0) Open ROM Flash Tool.exe
    1) Enter the flash mode
    2) Extract the recovery.img from file MK808B_CWM.zip, rename it to recovery-cwm.img and place it in the folder FinlessROM (this step is only to facilitate the next step)
    3) Let marked only the "recovery" and set the path FinlessROM\recovery-cwm.img (see image)
    4) And last click Flash ROM

    How boot in recovery mode?
There is an apk made by Petrus (credits to him). This apk let us to reboot, boot in recovery or bootloader mode (NEED ROOT). Is the simplier way to enter in recovery, you can find it in:

In mk808b and mk808 you can enter in recovery mode pushing the reset button while you power on the device.(I dont know how boot recovery in other devices, any suggestions you make for another devices will be add here).

Thats all, I am sorry about my english, is not so good, i will try to help you if you have any question. And of course if you can complete this tutorial or suggest any corrections, you are allways wellcome.

    Some tips, thanks:

Thanks, really I dont know, i was allways root cause the first I did when I receive it was make me root. And finless roms are rooted too. To use reboot apk you need root, but i dont know if root is needed to install cwm, I will test it when I arrive home.

Daemonium, why can't you use external sd?, NTFS filesystem is not supported. Is it your sdcard filesystem?

Nope, it's fat32. It says can't mount external_sd, nothing else. But i don't care because i actually make backups to internal sd and then move it to my pc

Ok i installed the first version of oficial firmware by geekbuying, that wasnt a rooted rom, and I install update.zip from original stock recovery. So you didn´t need root to install cwm recovery in your device.

In my case (mk808b)the only way to enter in recovery is pushing the reset button while you power on the device. The reboot apk by petrus need root. I restored the previus rom and everyting works well

SO NO NEED TO BE ROOTED TO INSTALL CWM RECOVERY.

                  Hi.
                  Just one small thing.
The CWM menu goes "out of the tv frame" :P although a tiny thing but any idea if this can be rectified?
                  thanks.

i have my simple logitech 2.4ghz keyboard. it worked pretty straight forward, first time, everytime. I had this apprehension that it wont. But it did. Can't really give you a solution but if possible try using a normal wired usb keyboard. can be useful in times of emergency (considering recovery as an emergency situation) :P

p.s. once the batteries in the keyboard was the culprit for me.
