New H96 Pro+ bricked itself after a couple of hours use. Help me diagnose / rescue, is the hardware dead?

    Hello dear forumers,

I see there are some knowledgeable people here, hopefully some light can be shed on my situation.

I just got a new H96 Pro+ 3GB/32GB version it's the unbranded "H96 Pro" on the box font. No "alfawise"
    Purchased via banggood.
I opened the case for your viewing pleasure.

    Relevant text says:
    Code:
    S32-V5(LPDDR3)
    2017-08-29
    Background:
I plugged it in first, hooked up to ethernet, watched youtube a bit, it worked.
Watched a movie via local DLNA server, audio didn't work (AC3 audio).
Tried a different version with different audio codec, worked. Watched.
The box was on for about 2hrs total.

Set a youtube mix to listen to music (video with static picture, easy). It crashed after 15min.
Couldn't revive box with remote, I unplug and replug.

Reboots in some weird chinese app streaming jack ma's speech.

I press esc and it gets to main menu.
    I start youtube again.
    Crash after <1min.
Reboot only gets to big H96 Pro+ logo and that's it.

    Current state and symptoms:
    Plugging it in
blue led blinks once then is in a very low brightness on. Sometimes it used to blink for about 10 seconds.
    No HDMI signal ever.

    What I've tried:
holding reset while plugging it in. Nothing changes.

    downloaded this .img:

    "[ NEW ] Firmware for all H96 Pro + and Generic Boxes with S912 - 9377 Wifi-Chipset. Aml_7.1_s912_q9377-S912_mac-20171010"
    posted by "Pugnetta"

burned it to an SDcard with windiskimg (microSD is 8GB size, should be ok right) to try to recover

nothing... after plugging in whether I hold reset button or not - blue led blinks once; then in a very low-brightness state.

    Questions:
    Is the thing dead hardware?
    Any way of reviving it?

    (I don't have a USB A-A cable atm)
I've seen some talk on connecting to it via serial console, how do I do that on this board?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Cheers

    @ zod,

    Ouch!
If possible, try this. Might not help, should not hurt.

    1. Pull power supply from wall and China Box (let adapter cool and reset). Remove SD card and any USB devices
    2. 15 min- or so. Then T.V. turn on, insert power barrel into China Box, and then plug into wall.
    3. Leave for several minutes to see if it has a delayed power cycle start...make sure your T.V. does not shut itself off while you wait.
I have experience a delayed start of several minutes and boom on it goes.

    4. Setting aside that the box may be bricked from SD card flash....
    5. If you have a powered USB hub or external USB power pack, plug in power adapter first then insert in USB hub /battery pack into USB port for extra power...
There is a growing concern that these power adapter's may be sub-standard, the extra juice may help (power adapter first ..hub second).

Did you pay extra for warranty on box for quick replacement (refer Paypal to these pages). I just got 4 of these from Banggood...one had a surprise boot delay(once) but other wise seem fine.
If any or all above fail, you have to option of getting/making USB A-ACable to try flashing with USB Burn Tool...

Get or make a usb male to male and flash this one via pc and the burning tool. The port you use is one right beside the sd card. Then make sure reset depressed and held. Its sometimes better to have burning tool already running before connecting the device. Least it helps me sometimes with errors. Good luck.

Wait a minute, are you saying the USB port is the hidden one, not beside the power socket?, I thought OTG USB was the first adjacent to the power socket. my device shows world cup only when I short some pins of the MMC,

I have the same exact model (S32-V5 (LPDDR3) 2017-08-29), same problem happened after an attempt to flash. All attempt to flash through USB stops at 2% stating [0x10105002]Romcode/Initialize DDR/Read initialize status/USB Control setup error
Once bricked, it just shows the blue light, no video output, no heat, no noise. Recovery mode doesn't happen either with microSD card.
Only way to make it reconnect again once bricked was to short the pins on the nand. That way I could flash a new ROM, but no ROM seem to work.

              Any idea?

What would it involve to make a ROM compatible with that version of H96 Pro + by 4K (the generic brand) ?

So, no need to short the pins anymore to get it on USB, but it still doesn't start, and I still can't flash anything, stopping at 2%. MicroSD card and reset button doesn't trigger recovery. I just get a blue light, and nothing on screen.

                Anyone?

I have got rid of 2 bricks supplied, I think changes to the Ram, LPDDR3 are causing issues.

Thanks to everyone for comments and suggestions.

I've tried the usual stuff suggested, no luck, will have some time this weekend maybe and make the USB A-A cable and give that a go but I'm not hopeful after the 2% reports seems we just got broken hardware that used to very temporarily work.

I mean it's not a big surprise chinese stuff has no Quality Control but I assumed there's a reasonable limit (idk >$10 device?) this is marketed at what 60eur/$65 price point or so. That's no joke.

Your reports are helpful at least, clarity is good.
                    Cheers.

Oh really. Wait, you had the same 2% symptomps before... but now it works after you have a new power supply?
Can you share the specs of your new power supply? Is it 3.0A or more? Thanks

And are you sure it was the same model? S32-V5 (LPDDR3) 2017-08-29 written on the board?
