Latest updates....
Based on system.img modified by manu_manu4 (many thenks for your work), now we have a new version of stock firmware. Is in X88 Mini Stock Firmware and is named X88_Mini_Stock_Firmware_flash_NOAPPS.img
Basicaly is the same firmware without preinstalled apps and youtube. Now you are free to install whatever you want. If you need root, then follow instruction provided in How to ROOT folder.

Try to follow this link. In description you will find the necessary software. Keep in mind it is possible to not work. On very first version 1.0.1, it was possible to have root with this method, but with newer versions it was not working anymore.

Once again this piece of crap have Netflix problem. UI-800-3 error. Chinese bullshit.....40$ spent on a lost cause. Netflix will never work ok on this box. I tryed to reinstall firmware, but there is no update to version 1.0.4,and because of that, i replaced system.img v.1.0.1 form my original firmware, with 1.0.4. There was a DRM update windows followed by reboot. Now the box have DRM Widevine L1 again.....but Netflix still don`t work. Its a lost cause. The most frustrating thing is that you have no one to complain about. Technical support is missing completely. You are at the hands of developers with whom you can not get in touch.
And so the experience is even more ruined, recently HBO GO has finally made an Android TV app. But .... because this device shit does not have Microsoft PlayReady DRM ..... HBO GO does not work. Error 5.1
I swear that the day I bought this shit, it's the last day I was fooled by a cheap Chinese. The $ 70 spent on Xiaomi Mi Box is worth every penny. Netflix works, HBO GO works, integrated Chromecast 4K function works (requires Microsoft PlayReady DRM). An entire community and technical support to help the buyer. Shy....

It was renamed, but.....

This was and older version and is no longer useful to anyone. I was trying to remove any unuseful apps and make a clean firmware, because the preinstalled version of Youtube and Netflix, no longer works. In a meantime, the firmware arive to version 1.0.4 witch is the latest version. DRM Videvine L1 cryptokeys was updated. An older version is no longer useful to anyone. Thats way it was removed. Use the link from my post #157, it is the latest firmware. But Netflix is no longer work. Once again. If you want a clean rom, just uninstall those apps.

I was succesful root this device, but only in very first version of firmware. A metod was posted someware on this forum. But my goal was to uninstall the preinstalled apps. Why do you need root? What are you trying to do? I ask because there is so mutch to tell and to learn about Android TV OS.
I will try to explain myself...
Android TV OS is a "premium" version of Android OS. It is made for TV only. The most important goal is to deliver streaming content. Most of app is based on streaming services. And most of streaming services are offered in HD resolution. Now, most of streaming services, like Netflix, HBO, Amazon, Hulu,.....they all have some anti-piracy method of protection. This type of protection is called DRM (digital rights management). Without this working DRM protection, no application will deliver to you HD stream or will no work at all.
And this is where the trouble begin.
Whitout a working DRM module, this version of Android is useless to anyone, because most streaming apps will not work. Without many words, an Android TV OS must be installed on a CERTIFIED DEVICE. This chinese box IS NOT CERTIFIED, and chinese manufacture simply tryed to bypass this type of protection. It work for a period of time, but now is not working anymore.

Android TV OS apps like Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon and any other app with DRM Protection, will only work on CERTIFIED devices. And one of the most important thing in this chain of trust is root acces. Any modification to Android system, will disable DRM protection, and then apps will no longer work.
This box came from factory with DRM Widevine L1. Very few boxes have L1 cerification. Any modification to android system...like root, downgradeing, or replace with another firmware and then reinstall the original firmware....will go to permanently lost Widevine L1 and have L3 insteed L1. Once you lost L1 is lost forever. Only factory will restore those certificate.

Now.....if you have original firmware, you have DRM L1. Is your choise if you want to root or flash another firmware. But keep in mind you probably loos DRM Widevine L1 permanently.
The only good thing is 1.0.4 (latesf firmware) witch have something uniq, it will reinstall Widevine L1,but in meantime Netflix have made some update and no longer work again.

In very few words, DONT BUY UNCERTIFIED android devices if you want protected content.

There is an app called DRM Info. It will show to you what type of cerification is installed on your devices.

Netflix HD and UHD require Widevine L1 AND Netflix CERIFICATION. Only Widevine L1 is not enough.
HBO Go and Chromecast function require Microsoft PlayReady and because this box dont have PlayReady, dont work.

The only CERTIFIED android boxes are Xiaomi Mi Box and Nvidia Shield, and branded TV manufactors like Sony, Philips,.....
Any other boxes are UNCERTIFIED, and IF it temporary work, under a period of time will be banned again. That was happent with X88mini and Meecool boxes.

I bought a MiBox 3 and a MiBox S, and i left behind all the problems that i have. For me....this chapter is close.
