Can someone try this and report?
I spended the whole saturday night looking things up about allwinner socs in general as well as a31 specific.. I even used baidu.com (chinese google) in combination with google translate (that's how i found that new phoenix card version).
I did find some intresting stuff that might be already known or not...
1) all allwinner devices are NOT softbrickable ... with that i mean that if you completely mess up your nand (dd'ing 0's or failed firmware update) and there's no oss whatsoever left it will boot into whats called fel mode .. http://linux-sunxi.org/FEL this is a low level system where you can communicate with the device to execute commands and even restore devices ... this is probably what some of those tools like phoenixsuite etc uses at some point. I came across a thread where there was a guy that on purpose brick is device by dd'ing zeros to the nand so fel mode would become active an he could restore his firmware using livesuite (http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.h.../521/focus=659 )
Not all allwinner devices use the same system to get the device in fel mode for example i've read posts about having to press 10 times the fel / recovery key and similar things
also this is only true if you of course have a complete original firmware (img file) to flash and a way to flash it (normally livesuite)
2) came across other threads where people also tried the phoenixcard version 3.09 to boot a linux kernel from sd card ... they came to the conclusion that there are problems with them on A31 device's .. there's a whole paragraph about his tries here on a 31 soc http://linux-sunxi.org/PhoenixCard
3) boot order changed on a31 devices http://linux-sunxi.org/BROM
4) linux kernel source and u-boot source are released http://git.rhombus-tech.net/linux & http://git.rhombus-tech.net/?p=u-boo...nner-sunxi-a31
5) i opened my B4K unit just to check if there wasn't a micro usb port on the pcb and just to see what's inside .. I was happy to see that there was a heatsink on the cpui also took photo's of it in case anyone is intrested i'll upload them
6) allwinner firmware images (*.img) can be unpacked & repacked so you can change your firmware using this tool to remove or add things & mess around .. (you do need a linux system for it) using this tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=49337733 extra info on modifying stuff ... https://www.miniand.com/wiki/Allwinn...iveSuit+images (explains basically everything)
in theory should there be fix found for the sd card booting stuff it should be possible to boot linux from sd card as well as another version of android
it's normally also possible to backup original firmware using dd command & exporting partitions .. i have seen a general script for this but can't find it back .. [edit did not find the script but found this ... which is equally good http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...tition-images/]
once i have my cables i start messing around .. can't wait .. i'm fairly certain we can get the firmware update work for b4k devices one way or anotherLast edited by joyrider; 13 January 2014, 20:13.

I`ve flashed FW from post #69. It works on my B4K, looks MUCH faster, but sometimes on my B4K it stops responding for a second. Process is very easy - create product card, fill nanda with 0, auto update from microSD on next boot. But it is EXTREMELY risky because you destroy existing fw before flashing new.

i'm willing to try this tommorow, but i'll probably use romdump to backup my (original) firmware first so i can flash it back if i want to. Even if it fails it should enter fel mode anway and i get my cables soon.
Did you do some benchmarks on the old / original firmware as well as on the new one ? (like for example antutu scores to compare speed diffrences)

Unable to connect the U4K ...
Hello people.
After the upgrade I can not get connected anyomore.
The blue light in the unit goes on for about 8 seconds and then goes off.
The error message is: "Device driver software was not successfully installed".
I am attaching here the screenshot of the pic.
Tried to find the driver in question to no avail.
Any suggestions?

No benchmarks. Stock FW was slow and laggy. I was ready to throw out the box without regrets. For me it was easy decision to try to flash itNew FW is better. No need to benchmark it.
Afaik if you fill nanda with zeros A31 will try to boot from micro sd and open USB port for PC connection. I have $2 male-male USB cable. First i`ve tried to upgrade from PC. Box was recognized by PC, recognized by PhoenixUSB, but upgrade process didn`t start. However sd card upgrade worked just fine on my B4K.
That is what i did. It worked on my B4K. I take no responsibility and don`t guarantee it will work on your B4K.
Clearing nanda is easy by the way. Root B4K with A31 root tool. Install android terminal from the Google market. “su”, “dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/nanda”. Done. FW is destroyed and device is no longer working as a media player. But bootloader starts in a kind of repair mode. Risky.

this fel mode thing is included in the hardware so can never be erased.
I'll do it myselve this eveing but after doing romdump and a few benchmarks on the old firmware to compare to the new one
I hope my air mouse will work on the new firmware .. it did not on the old it paierd but was very stuttery and the keyboard did not work.
i'll also try messing with the cables

The device drivers are not signed which normally gets blocked since windows vista but there are ways around it. I'm having a code 10 error (device does not start) but could very well be that it works as soon as i connect it the pc. if things keep feeling look up how to circumvent the driver signing stuff in windows.. I was actually preparing a windows xp pc for all of this since there these problems do not exist, it was not checked before
First time everything was OK, next times the MTP Driver does not install.
The unit boots up OK but no Wifi, I just wanted to make sure I'll be able to install the so long awaited firmware when it gets available.
Good to know Windows XP is not so picky :-), but Win7 does not even mention signing being a problem ...

USB Debugging is enabled.
The only way I can see that, is while the unit is connected to my TV Set.
No way to double check on my PC as the connection procedure does not complete.
Thanks.

i just got my male to male usb cable and i know how to make windows detect the Measy B4K using it (not usb debugging but fel mode).
remove the power cable from measy b4k, plug one end of the usb male to male cable in pc then use a tootpick to push in the "reco" button (there's a small hole on the left of the device) keep pressing this button now attach the other end of the usb male to male cable to one of the usb ports, keep pressing the button until windows detects a new device
but all the drivers i tried would not work, probably because of the driver signing stuff :/
i'm going to try the phoenixcard way now

By the way, my B4K is still alive after phoenixcard upgrade - 4.2 and smooth UI. Unfortunatelly HW video decoding for its chipset still not always working.
