    Pipo U8 RileyROM 1.9 KitKat

This ROM is based on an official update posted by Pipo dated 1/14/14.

There was no change log, or any indication of what's changed in the firmware. I expected Pipo to start adding some bloatware to the firmware this time...but it was straight, clean Android from the start.

What I have done is add the libril patch to enhance sleep mode capability, and I also turned up the power on the wifi. I actually see a big difference in wifi signal running this ROM.

While I did keep the auto install feature (SEE THIS LINK)with CWM Recovery being installed after the first boot, my testing of this reveals that CWM is still a no go. You will cause a lockup and have to re-flash the ROM if you attempt to reboot to recovery...so just don't try it. Consider yourself warned. I'm still committed to finding a working version of CWM for this tablet, but so far not.

If you are already running KitKat on your tablet, there is no need to flash the loader.bin, so uncheck it. If you are flashing a KitKat for the very first time...YOU MUST LEAVE THE LOADER CHECKED in the flash tool.

IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE FLASHING A KITKAT ROM ON YOUR U8...READ THIS THREAD!!!!!!!

    As usual this ROM is:

    Rooted
    Debloated
    Init.d Support
    Busybox Support
    English Default
2, 4, 6, 8, or 12gb user app space by changing parameter files
Multiple ko modules for VPN and other networking support added
    Boot Animation by Tattman65
    Reboot app by Petrus
    Updated First Time User's Guide
Rockchip driver installer app is now included in the kit

Perhaps there is a better chance of TWRP supporting KitKat than CWM?

      Not sure for TWRP.

Well, we're well and truly stumped with KitKat then (i.e., if we are interested in a functional recovery, rather than the "dead android" stock recovery).

PS: I do have TWRP on my Chinese phone, and it is amazing.

There's two avenues to address recovery. Either go to each of the developers and request a rebuild of CWM for KitKat or a TWRP for Rockchip.

Finless has talked about making a new CWM. We can also try to support his efforts...with a little encouragement.

It's easier for the big brand tablets to get CWM / TWRP as they are already supported by Cyanogen Mod which it is compiled against. When you Google about compiling TWRP for an unsupported device it says you need to successfully build CWM first so that's really the starting point.

I've installed the ROM replacing the 1.8 version, but personally I haven't noticed any differencies. It even seems to be a bit wore for the battery life, but it is still very good.
I wonder something about the battery consumption : Why is there a lose of battery because of "Mobile Standby" whereas there isn't a 3G module inside ?

Anyway, thank you very much Riley for your work :-)

I have also installed this new version of your ROM replacing the 1.8.2 version.
                I have seen some differences:
                - in the Wifi connection (it was already good with the 1.8.2 ROM but it's better now!)
                - some games were not compatible with the device with the 1.8.2 and are now compatible on the Google Play market.

Perhaps a bit little wore for the battery life but not really significative.

Thanks a lot for your work!

I increased the wifi power in this ROM...which could account for increased battery consumption. If it is too much, I can dial it back...but I'm liking the added wifi power, myself.

I do agree with you: the increased wifi power is a good point for me too!

I don't see a change in wifi, unfortunately...
anyway: the reboot button, and with it the option to add screenshot/video to the power menu, is back!

Thank you Randy for your good work.
I agree that the wifi is better.
Have you noticed when the tablet is booting a strange noise? Something like a tik. I cannot understand if is from loudspeaker or from somewhere else.
                        It's normal or not?

                          That's normal.

                          It's actually the camera initializing.

The TWRP recovery includes the kernel from the specific tablet it's designed for.

The U8 has a very unique set of components controlled by the U8 Kernel. I really don't think it will work on the U8. It's risky.
