I've done a bit of reading up and going to try the Neomode Hybrid 1.7rom with the Sam kernel to try and get some more performance from this box. The stock ROM isn't great!
Netflix, stock XBMC, MX Player all reinstall then self's on boot. Won't uninstall or stay disabled. Ethernet is very poor aswel. Only 5meg speed from my 30mb broadband. I also have apps missing in the Google play store and have to find the apks online.

Will update in a day or two with how it runs.

For now the best is stock 4.2.2 ... although twice reboot when I pressed him a bit ... Minix x7 rom proved to be very fast and stable ... obvious problem is the appropriate kernel ... so far I have never managed to get CWM with whom I could do a Nandroid Bacup ... just in this version which starts with four (4120 or 4012 or ... forgot to write down, but it is part of a stock rom) ... no Bacup options ... If someone has an idea how to extract from our stock kernel without nandriod Bacup...it would be a real contribution ...

Wasser 1.2.4 worked best as a ROM. But problem was with kernel's New kernels no WiFi/BT. Old kernel 720p high CPU usage and 1080p struggled to maintain good fps. Down to the CPU being 1.4.2GHz I guess.

Wasser KitKat 0.9 ran great but bad sound (crackles) lewy Hybrid doesn't get past boot.
These are all I've tried so far.

I think there is a Rockchip tool that extracts stock firmware if that's what you mean?

hi gor and ollie, I have only tried the stock firmware so far. Seems pretty stable, wifi nice and strong, but video playback is really bad on my SD mp4s;
- xbmc plays dark, stutters, unwatchable
- SBMC plays the mp4/aac vids nicely (after audio sync is tweaked) but drops to 1fps on xvid/mp3 ones!
- MX player works for the video, but audio is out of sync

the "video" app seems best in terms of playback, but is a terrible interface for choosing the video files. it appears to have support for hardware gpu decoding, which is what you need for video to work on these machines. even a quad core cant do it with the CPU alone... surely?

Hi, what kind of TV app is that? If you want to watch live TV. XBMC is the way to go
SPMC works well in this device, I advise you to watch some YouTube videos on how to set up and watch TV on android using XBMC

Hey dude. WiFi and BT worked using the OLD T-R42 kernels packed with the wasser 1.2.4 ROM. However.. 1080p kernel looks great but some fps drop as CPU/GPU at 1.4.1ghz and stock. The 720p kernel has high CPU usage and playback is worse than the 1080p kernel. When you go to system info in XBMC it shows the Max fps as 33-37fps stock ROM/kernel is a solid 60fps.
If we can find a working kernel to go with Wasser 1.2.4 we may have a nice set up.

MX player you need to install ARM7 neon codec and then in settings decoder, download and install the patched codec from XDA link is in settings of MX player.
Or you could use, Archos video player with the All codecs for Archos plugin and MPEG2 plugin. Plays MKV/DTS etc

I managed with RK-tool2.1 to extract update_mk918_100k4100_beta0.1 and get the kernel ... in update_cs918_203j2104_overseas_1 kernel is hidden and can not be obtained ... I im posted that kernel on mediafire...

It seems to be a jellybean kernel ...
In RKTool 2.1 under the Advanced optiontab you pick in FW rom that you want to unpack, and you push unpack ...
then in output folder that appears within RKtool in Android folder you have image folder and in them is image of system, kernel, misc, recovery and boot...
