Well let's add a little colour into our lives with the Q box
    Amlogic S905 2/16 GB 2.5/5 GHZ WI-FI Optical, 2 x usb2 Sd card slot and Av Out.
Thanks to Geekbuying and DHL for super fast shipping to Australia

What we have here is a sharp looking Media Player
With this groovy (haters will hate) Light display around the edge.
Thinking, hope we can organise this to flash and pulse with music to be annoying.

Above without the lid for the full effect.
But alas all it does it cycle 3 colours so far, devastated not.
    No Power button
Let's have a look and see what we have.
Complete Unit, Flash looking Remote, AU Power Plug (Yaa) and HDMI cable

Inside, this would have to be the most populated PCB I have seen in awhile
More on the bottom than the top or is it the other way around.
Note : Reset button behind the AV Port.

You can also see in the above picture of the Optics closer, 2 leds bit of clear solid plasticy thing, easy to remove.Too reduce the glow a little I removing the tube, there is also a clear bezel window around the edge lets the light out, you could remove this also to allow some air circulation as it does get warm/hot and as it's a sealed with the exception of ports etc, not many places for the heat to get out. None.

    WIFI Chip

Here we have the Ram I recall using this make of ram years ok...unsure of its correct make.
I use to call it Superman Ram, not sure if it can leap building in a single bound, or faster than a speeding bullet. but it appears ok at the present.

    Switch on.....
One of the most impressive Boot up logo I have seen in awhile something akin to a Spielberg Movie.

Colourful GUI different, running Android 5.1

    Testing

Easy power on, setup no hassles. Connecting to WIFI, 5ghz, Google straight in few updates done and easy.
Android 5.1 interface nothing different found as yet
Downloaded the usual 10 or so regular apps I use for testing, speed good and no stalling while installing smooth

WIFI ok considering it's a sticky tape antenna about 4 meters from router good strength.

    Heat
Idle 55c doing stuff up to 75c using CPU Temp Pure from Google Play

Heat seeking device is showing 10C less on the PCB than the actual software, so it's still a hotty but easy fix I feel.
A bit of thick thermal pad between heatsink on cpu and metal weight plate in the base will help the cause I believe,
and it did by 20c at idle. the distance was a little too far so i raised the Base plate closer to heatsink with some packing.

As you can see by Temperature, top middle of screen
Above was yesterday on the bench and open doing tests
Below a few minutes ok Mod done and unit sealed.

As I have been advised Holes are very expensive to buy still.

Ok some scores for those that like the number and looking OK

More Detail of the Geekbench score can be seen: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/6086876

That's all the basic testing for the minute, I dare say it will compare to most of the other S905 Media Players about.

Looks are good if you need a little colour in your life it's not that distracting really, all a bit of fun.

Performance is looking good at this stage no weird stuff happening as yet, time will tell
Bit of a mod has reduce the heat by 20c and that has to be good, even tho it would be ok running as it was.

More to come with Kodi and other stuff as it happens.

Unit does not have root as it comes but will what happens with EZ root etc a little later.
    Cheers

    Cheers

This type of remote can operate with other cheap S905 boxes too? I have Beelink M18, but a lot of dedicated buttons missing from factory remote.

Finless EZ root appears to do the job easy on this device.

Good review trebor (as always!) - I know that you have also reviewed the Beelink M18 earlier - how do these two stack up together? I prefer the full featured remote on the QBox, and of course the external antenna on the M18 - plus its not as "garish". Be interested to hear your views

This one i find prety fluid, meaning it flows well and does well. The fanfare with the light show is a bit of fun and creative removal is possible.
The WiFi is ok but needs a bit more and it pretty easy to fit external or better.
For what this box is and the short amount of time its been about. Its good
More suuport from users and rom makers this thing has pertential to Rock.
                Cheers

They must have had a read of my review

Well that is interesting, maybe in the new firmware ? , that i am yet to load, sometime this day
But yet it's a nifty zippy little box.

And yes I can confirm the new firmware does let me control the LED and OFF with info button,
That would mean my remote with Info button could be a collectors item.

They have also removed the sound from the boot animation, a good idea as you would I think get tired of it at startup all the time.

                    Cheers

This box with its 16GB, and dual-band WiFi appears to be a bit of a bargain.
The 10c difference with temp gauge vs software indicated, were both tests taken with the lid off?
So this box looks nice, but I could see adding larger heatsink, buying a couple dozen holes for the case and adding external antenna. Now if only the light show could sync with the tunes, based on the learned opinions from you guys, it would be a total bargain.
So I'm thinking this one goes on my possible buy list, and I already have two S905s. But let's face it, two is just a good start.

HaHa. I was going to go with the dog ate it. But then she'd just give me the business over letting the dog eat plastic(again). So hiding might it be the way to go.

Advice? Is this box worth buying? Any other comparable boxes?

                            Thnx

Is this one of the boxes that has gotten the Kodi developers so pissed off? Supect it is, since it's being called a Kodi TV Box.
