I can see the desktop icons but if I open a terminal I am not able to see the text at all, just a black background. I have tried to replace the dtb.img with the one I believe is for this box but to no avail. Any ideas?

Try this way. In Ubuntu, is not clear yet for me the reason is not the correct color mapping. Previously this was solved by replacing the file script start s905_autoscript. When using 24 bit color. Now it doesn't work. I need time to understand the cause (now a lot of the main work).

WiFi enable You can do to try to build a kernel with the new configuration (enable the necessary options, add modules and firmware need). You can have your way Armbian. This is simple enough. GIT to build git armbian and the nucleus, which is involved in the Assembly of the image Armbian.

If something is not clear, ask, I will try to help.

Do I just clone it with "git clone https://github.com/150balbes/Amlogic...l/tree/armbian" and go from there?

On some models, TV consoles, not all USB ports immediately activated. To add to the init script command to activate them. In this thread and on the forum Armbian was information like this can be done.

To build the kernel, you can use the console version of the image. It is lighter and consumes less resources. So I recommend to try to use the updated scripts autostart system (s905_autoscript) for a screen resolution of 720. They are uploaded to the site.

Pay attention to these image Linux is not designed for multimedia.
