That is in the kernel. It was not easy. Had to use a hex editor to find the start and end.
Then the format is not any kind of known image. Its RAW bits.

FWIW, there's a thread over on XDA by a guy (ameer123456790) who developed a way to run a Nandroid from *within* the OS, while booted to Android, using a terminal emulator. He and I went round and round with a bunch of PM's, with me sending logfiles, etc. and his tweaking it, and this morning, with his latest version, I was actually able to run a Nandroid backup *from* a terminal window. Quite amazing. Now all I have to do is write a script that I can turn into a widget, and I won't even have to reboot to recovery to do a Nandroid.
