TWRP for Amlogic devices.

There's no reset button. I can get into recovery but pressing the menu button repeatedly but the receiver isn't rooted so I cannot install twrk. I added a dummy rom.zip to the SD card root.Comment

I don't know your box but with the most other amlogic boxes you don't have to install TWRP. You just boot it directly from sdcard instead of the recovery installed on NAND-Flash. So you don't need root to backup your rom with TWRP.
Also I think root has only an effect in the firmware itself and has nothing to do with installing recovery.Comment

Are you trying to install TWRP? Sure you use the right one for your box?
The ones posted in OP are just for S802 devices and will not work.
As I said with my box I only have to have the TWRP recovery.img in root of sdcard and boot into it with reset button. So you don't have to install TWRP and to overwrite original. If something goes wrong you can still boot into (original) NAND recovery.
And "apply update from EXT" is only working for zip not for img-files.Comment
