you do not need to be in /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/gt9xx directory, i was at the moment i tried but it's not needed.

Just to be sure, you only typed the folowing command in a shell ? :

cat /proc/gt9xx_config

EDIT : i get the same as you if i paste the whole line and not only the command "cat ..."

So you/we have a GT928 hardware chip, but if i'm right it seems to be seen as a GT927, in a software way.

900supersport gets PID=928 with his working tablet built the same week as your, 1 week before mine.

You would already know if i had :-)

I don't know how to modify the config, even temporarily.
As touch screen is not working in recovery, i think the GT928 firmware/config may have been overwritten with a bad one. I have read that touch screen firmware and config are stored in the chip itself (or in something related to the chip), not in the eMMC.
But i've read a lot of things recently and may have either misunderstood or read something that is not related to this goodix chip. This only a thought.
