In any case, I'm pretty sure that my problem is a bit different since it does go from 1.1.5 to 1.1.6 and keeps all settings on each reboot. I even set up Kodi RC (came out yesterday) and everything was ok. The problem is going into recovery from 1.1.6.
The problem involving recovery (if the toothpic method does not work without sd card installed) is the recovery partition is either damaged or missing. Hence you will not be able to go into recovery in this case and will need to follow the instruction to force a proper format of the firmware.

    how to be sure,

power off your box (not standby but by pulling the power cord)

toothpic inserted holding down (no sd inserted)

while still holding recovery power on device and leave until you see the recovery interface appear - may take a minute or 2.

If black screen the recovery is as mentioned above damaged or corrupted

I believe the recovery is damaged as you mention. I tried this last night (holding recovery for 1-2 minutes with no SD card inserted) and it remained at a black screen.

The question is why did it go into recovery fine with 1.1.5 (after magic SD card installation) and fails on 1.1.6? Does it have anything to do with the fact that I installed 1.1.6 using the same magic SD card after placing only the three 1.1.6 FW files on the SD root (and removing the magic SD card 1.1.5 contents)? Maybe I should have gone into 1.1.5 recovery first, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache and force update 1.1.6 (update through EXT) instead of letting it auto update with SD card inserted on recovery boot?

Can you please share how did you make your "Magic card"

Earlier i had the same issue and with dexstar's nand scrub and loading 1.1.5 firmware my box was working but i have the blue light and black screen issue again.

        Thanks for your time.

          I followed kerikhaos instructions:

          1. Created the magic SD card following the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...7&postcount=12
          2. After the card was created, I moved all files/folders (cut-paste) to a temporary folder on my PC
          3. Placed the two nand scruber files by Dexstar in the root of the SD card
          4. Boot into recovery using the toothpick method (hold toothpick for about 1-2 minutes) and left it do whatever it does for about 20 minutes (black screen throughout the process)
          5. Removed the two nand scrubber files from the SD card and put back on the SD root the files/folders I had moved on a temp folder on my PC
          6. Booted using the toothpick method and it automatically started installing 1.1.5. First the screen went green and then I could actually see the android logo with the installation progress bar.

But after upgrading to 1.1.6 (successfully), I cannot get into recovery to install Openelec.

ok you need to focus on my steps after i successfully get to 1.1.5. you are using the sd card to bring to 1.1.5 which in my experience results in a bad flashed 1.1.6

how to prove this theory? When you flash the 1.1.5 bennibenassi magic sd fw before you do anything else test to see if the recovery works on that firmware. i.e take sd card out and toothpic recovery till the recovery screen appears. If it does appear then the nand is working correctly and the fw is fine but the process from the bennibenassi version of the 1.1.5 fw to 1.1.6 is whats causing your problem (incorrect partitions are created or unable to be created therefore your recovery is broken)

go to the acemax site which i have listed in an earlier post and download the earlier fw of mbox i specified in my intructions. Flash this fw with the magic card first, then use original matricom 1.1.5 to upgrade as per described in the instructions.

Then read carefully the jump i make from 1.1.5 to 1.1.6. Once you done this check recovery again to see if its working and post back your results

the sd card process is written all over this thread the only thing you need to be sure when creating this card is your card is bigger than 4gb (pref 8gb) - once you create the magic sd card the benni benassi 1.1.5 fw is whats on the root directory (along with 2x extra file which wake the box up from a soft brick)

The other files (the normal 3x firmware files) can be swapped about or hidden in folders to make room for other firmwares when upgrading or flashing.

Just use the hdd tools and make sure you unzip the big file to get the image file out before you run the process of magic card creation. Then check root of the sd card when complete to see if all firmware files are present so you can start the recovery process

Ok will follow your steps starting from the mbox FW. Just a clarification: when you 're saying "flash mbox fw with the magic SD card", do you mean create the magic SD card following bennybenasi instructions, then remove ONLY the three 1.1.5 FW files (.aml, recovery and fw zip) from the SD card and place those of mbox FW? Or should i remove ALL files/folders?

you got it, remove the 3x/4x firmware files and leave only the 2x smaller files which are used to wake the system up from a soft brick (just create a folder and move those files in there). The rest leave as is and stick the 3x files in from the mbox firmware stated earlier,

then go download official matricom update (not the bennibenassi one) and continue my instructions to upgrade to 1.1.5. Proceed then to 1.1.6 testing all the time recovery and partition table

                  good luck

So what you saying is -

                    1. Nand scrub using Dexstar 2 files and then
                    2. Then use the mbox firmware and flash the box and
                    3. then matricom 1.1.5.

                    Have i got it right??

I am asking coz i was able to fix my box using Dexsta's nand files and then installed 1.1.5 and i saw change in colours on screen (sometimes its pink, blue, green or grey) and then then the android guy comes and it installs the firmware and then the box was working

I just dont know why the same method isnt working this time??

                    Any suggestions?

you are failing something with the nandscrub process or your sd card is not properly setup to be a proper magic card. Re do your magic card again to be sure (i used the same magic card to scrub the files only difference i did was hide all the files created from the magic card process in a created folder to get them out the way of the scrubbing - just have the daxter files in the root of the same magic card. The process should be given a clear 10 mins to work the magic -but have your toothpic held down for at least 2 mins before releasing and waiting the full 10.

In the mean time put back the files you placed in the empty folder back in the root directory not forgetting to delete the daxter files first. begin recovery of the bennibenassi 1.1.5 fw

                        good luck

no this is not normal which is why your most likely failing the flashes. Maybe something is wrong with your card reader or the actual sd card. If you ahve another card to test and if it says the same thing then you have a bad card reader. Your best bet is to use a cheap sd to usb converter off **** to do the job

hmmm something else i thought off. Did you uncompress the zip file first to get the raw hdd image file? it wont work if your selecting the zip file

When you're saying "hard flashed" you mean via toothpick method. Or manually update through EXT?
