After and for the rest of the night I ran the box with no SD card inserted and it was fine all night and again this morning. So I'm really starting to think it's either my SD card or the reader that is the problem.

Am going to buy a new SD card later this week to see if that is the problem as mine is a real cheap Chinese, non branded one I got for free

I really hope that the SD is the cause of all my woes, TBH I can live without it if I have too and just backup to USB or my Network. Better than throwing money away on postage to China for a replacement with no guarantee of the box being any better as seems a few out of the very small number that have been sold are having freeezing/shutdown problems.

Admin at Minix implied it was my fault for rooting it!!! But did say if I send it to him direct he was change it for me but to be honest can't be bothered being without the box for a month waiting for the snail mail shipping as I live in Thailand.
I pulled out my sd card and had one shutdown .. doesnt mather i think.

Never when playing video only when doing thing in xbmc or es explorer.

Very anoing and also minix themselve dont have this problem they say.
So a fix isnt gonna be in next fw.

True, Minix are not confirming this as a real problem, despite the fact many have had shutdowns, so no fix in the works.

I'll keep reporting on my SD card(less) testing but last night was the most stable it's ever been, when not inserted.

I also don't get the option in 'Storage' to erase/format the sd, infact it's all very confusing as it just says sdcard, not external sd. And whether it is inserted or not sd card shows with having apps installed to it even though non are.

I'll take some screen shots later.

Thanks I'm aware of that. Still the video issues seem to be related to the 1080p kernel. Choppiness all over even with MX-player.

Sv: UPDATED - Minix Neo X7 - Finless 1.5a ROM

1 shutdown in xbmc and 1 freeze in chrome, I took out power adapter.
          I am on 720p version.
Choppiness and jiddering in tune in radio and xbmc.
Device startup time more than 3minutes with this ROM. Under 2 minutes with original rom.
1 freeze more in tune in startup. I must take the power adapter.

1.5a video plays less smoothly as 1.4a

Hi Bob, Appreciate your hard work. However, I seem to appreciate 1.4a 1080p noair more so than 1.5a 1080p noair small.

Video is a bit more choppy now than it was with 1.4a. It's not choppy as in slide-show choppy, but less smooth than before, just enough to induce headache and not make viewing video a pleasant experience. Using hardware accelerated video players MX Player, the default android videoplayer and the colorfull ehomemediaplayer thing. I tried same video files as before, just goes less smoothly now.

Installed both the firmwares following your instructions carefully, and erased the nand before installing the rom both times.

Good news is that the power off function now works, it is there, it powers off the minix and it actually stays powered off! Yeay! Also appreciate the google search bar now being gone! Looks even better now. However I am not that enthusiastic about the boot animations, but that's an 'eye of the beholder' kinda thing.

Again, really appreciate your hard work. Reflashing to 1.4a though. That played video with MX Player almost perfectly! And it looked good doing it.

By the way anyone get Archos Video to play smoothly? It seems Archos Video just does software decoding here...? MX Video is way more smoothly, but I really enjoy the interface Archos made, with the SMB browser and all. It looks so good... Anyone got that working smoothly?

I am sorry to say that i have not found any rom/kernel that plays Archos good. For me this is a big problem, i use Archos maybe 80% of the time i use the box.

It uses HW decoding but you can in menus choose force software but it dosen't get any better imo. Also please go to Archos google+ group and let them know that we have bad video, mabey they can fix it.

                Stuck loading USB driver

I wanted to see if anyone here has seen this problem. After I loaded the USB driver I rebooted both my PC and Minix Neo X7 and tried to go back into flash mode but the flash program never had the green box, I saw in the device manager that the USB driver had a question mark next to it so then I rebooted the Minix into normal mode to go into settings to see if it was still in developer mode but now it is stuck on screen with the big MINIX logo flashing and it will not finish booting. Thanks

If the device has a question mark - then you need to right click - update driver and manually (not automatic) select the driver with Finless' rom. After that try flashing again.

Has anyone gotten smooth video to work?
I had no luck with 1.5a and the 1080p air kernel. I now tried the 004 official firmware.
With this, I get perfect playback with the 720p kernel, but only when I adjust the display mode to the video content I want to play = setting 24hz in the screen settings for 1080p24 movies, which again makes my contend which is not 24 fps unwatchable. So I constantly have to switch video modes in the setting menu which is annoying.

With the 1080p kernels, I didn't get 720 oder 1080p content to play smoothly at all

Bottom line 1080 kernels are going to be laggier than 720 kernels!
Many might think a quad core can handle true 1080 resolution but it appears it cant in all cases especially if it's not in local NAND or SD card.

Well, I'm watching 1080p 9gb mkv h264 mpeg4 24fps avc 1920x800 video-file with subtitles on the 1080p finless rom right now, and it's pretty smooth to me. It's on 1.4a though, using mx video. It just didn't go this smooth on 1.5a. Oh, watching over ethernet and samba.

True, it won't play any and all 1080p video completely fluently, but I've tested quite a few, and it's pretty good, you did an awesome job there, Bob!

I think the RK firmware needs further fine tuning. I doubt the problem is with the 4 cpu cores, but on the gpu side of things. I mean my wife's old AMD system has 4 pretty slow cores, but a very nice Radeon GPU, and it has no trouble with ANY video I have ever thrown at it. The GPU and its drivers make all the difference. Just my opinion.

And I play all videos over wifi, but I bit the bullet and bought a very high bandwidth router -- one with a very good rep for a strong wifi radio... the ASUS Black Knight.

Yes, I have several android devices with much lower specs, which play the same videos fine which the X7 is unable to. Also, I don't think all problems are performance related. With 720p Kernel, and tweaked advancedsettings.xml, I get full hw acceleration in xbmc, it shows no dropped or skipped frames and constant 24 fps. BUT video is still slightly choppy unless I set the display resolution to 24hz. So it seems to be a problem related to the 60->24 hz pulldown.

Ok, I just tried the custom kernel "kernel_20130822_160805_phja_t428_1080p_cpu1800h_d d r720_vsfsam" from the "Fixing RK3188 video playback" threat and indeed:

Now I get absolutely smooth video with 1080p 60hz and XBMC!
Unfortunately, the kernel doesn't support ethernet.

Finless, could you pleeease incorporate the fix in your kernel?

Can you post the download link here ? A lot of links over there

+If i change this kernel , does it affect to the current ROM , or just change the kernel only ?

+btw , the kernel was made for T428 , Will it compatible with X7 ?

                                thanks
