Its a valid guess and may certainly be correct but its not the only one.

It could be that these are improved versions of the cpu which as of yet have gotten full support.

These cpu though at the moment slower do appear to be more stable then the older models so its a toss up which is going on.

Also it seems unlikely that they would falsely put out a cpu and risk getting into major trouble with thier buyers and the law.
That kind of risk is just too large for so minor a reward in comparison.

I asked geekbuying a partially refund as the item is not as advertised (MK 809 III). I said my device is RK3188T CPU and not a RK3188 and explain it can't run @ 1,6Ghz. I put a link to this forum (in particular post #16) in my Email. Here is the answer.

WTF?

Maybe it's a lie because RK3188T has no overclock margin - can't overclock.
Even if it could, after modification, it will still screw up because of the lack of margin from the hardware itself.

When seller sells me a device which is advertised as 1.6Ghz but can work only at 1.416Ghz maximum, what is it? At least misrepresentation, if not a ripoff or fraud. I understand that sellers might not know these details, but we the customers are dealing directly with sellers, not manufacturers, so sellers should be responsible for these mistakes too, that is part of their business.

Can not find the stable firmware on all tormazit interface (some not so much), but at all a problem with Wi-Fi.
The problem with Wi-Fi is that the signal level at full but after 5-10 minutes of all say that the proposal has no interent. If the connection is reconnected nachinate work, but 5-10 minutes. (

i want to make this clearly, when i saw this news, i am immediatley contacting with rockchip contact, and they have confirmed, the rk3188-t .

but rk3188-t is not crap cpu. rk3188-t won't support retina screen, so on tablet, we should advoid the rk3188-t cpu. but on tv sticks, there is no such problems.

rockchip has release patches to make the firmware Compatibility for rk3188 and rk3188-t. the price difference for those two chip is about 1.5-2 usd.

as far as i know, most of the android tv stickes in market has been used the rk3188-t. rockchip want to make a different, in tablet, use rk3188, in tv boxes, use the rk3188-t.

that's the information i get. will share with you guys more when i get more.

Looking at the responses from GeekBuying, it is most likely that RK3188-T are chips which had failed the retina screen tests and 1.6GHz over-clocking tests during production, therefore it is being sold as a lower cost version of the RK3188 for the cost sensitive generic TV stick market.

RK3188-T is capped at lower frequency by the Kernel, therefore it will run at lower temperatures hence it would appear to be more stable.

It is just like the sub-performing Pentium CPUs being sold as Celeron CPUs by Intel, all silicon vendors does these kind of manuvers, a nice way of saying this is that the product offers a lower cost variant to differentiate the market, but the truth is that it is a marketing method to get rid of the sub-performing chips to reduces the yield losses during manufacturing.

Yes, you are absolutely right! A responsible vendor would do the following when a situation like this occurs (if the vendor does not aware in advance that the manufacturer has used a lower cost substitute component):

1) Accept the return of the goods from the consumers, provide a full refund and compensate for all the extra costs from returning the product.

2) If the customer wish to keep the product, the vendor should provide a credit to the customer on the cost difference for using the lower cost component.

3) Rectify all misleading advertisement, correctly state the "real" product specification, issue a formal public apology.

4) Take the product off the shelf until the original manufacturer comes up with a satisfying solution (which should include penalty, product replacement and corrective and preventive action plans).

Hello, I just want to let you know that this ROM (click) works on 1,6GHz and can be used with overclocked kernels on RK3188T. But please confirm it because I can't check the chip writing - the cozyswan S400 device I tested is not my own - but I also have problems with overclock on any other ROM so I assume that it is RK3188T. Most likely it is the same device as TVDroid has.

I cannot confirm this, I've just flashed this rom as is. For me, it gives screen blinks and flickerings, same result as with any other ROMs with 1.6Ghz or higher kernels. (I haven't tried the overclocked kernels yet)

I contacted the seller on Amazon and told him my CPU is locked at 1.4.1ghz. He sent me a link to new firmware, maybe this unlocks the CPU? I don't have my laptop for a few days so I cannot test. Here is the link if needed.

The funny thing is that I have had this working about a month ago when I didn't know that I "can't" overclock it :-D I just couldn't realize why other roms don't work properly..

EDIT: The missing shutdown button is the reason why the device got back to me and why I found this thread when I was searching for different ROM :-) Root should not be a problem.
