    Rooting

Good to see there's a few others out there (just came across this thread)

I posted this to XDA. That's the simplest method I found to root the tab.
Just picked one of these up from Walmart. So far, not a bad tablet for the price. Their website is reporting it will have a KitKat update on July 15, 2014. Rooting instructions for Nextbook 8 Quad Core (NX785QC8G). 1. Connect to PC via USB...

Would love to see if there's an interest in porting Ubuntu Touch to this tab:

    Cheers.

      vold.fstab Help!

Wondering if someone could help me out.

I was editing the /system/etc/vold.fstab file to get the external sd to show up as the primary storage and made a mistake in the code. Now the tab locks up on boot up.

The tab is rooted, but I can't get adb to work from recovery (currently stock). I could possibly sideload the file via an update.zip.

What are my options? I just need to update the one file.

      Super grateful for any assistance!

I've only started to work on this device, but my understanding is that the these are the only ways to modify the device:
        • Use the RK Flash Tool (Requires a factory update.zip ROM or a backup made with the RK Flash Tool)
        • Flash an update.zip from recovery (Requires a factory ROM for stock recovery or custom recovery installed)
        • ADB (Requires a properly formatted files and working ADB connection - ADB does not run in stock Recovery)
        • from Terminal Shell (Requires bootable device)

There's a couple of options for flashing from Linux that will read or flash individual images, boot, system etc. Also rkandroid can flash individual images. In each case you will need an appropriate parameter file.

            Flashing system files

            Thank you both! Helpful.

Im wondering if I can create a custom update.zip using the update-binary from an update for the same chipset? I've seen tutorials on doing this.

I don't want to completely brick the device. Any suggestions?

            Thanks.

Maybe, but it won't work unless you sign it with the same keys that Nextbook used to compile the stock recovery from source.

                Keep up the good work!

I just came across this tablet, and it has a lot of potential. I'm running CM11 on my Galaxy s4 and I would like some kind of custom rom, preferably CM, on this tablet if I get it. Keep up the good work!

It's not a bad device and a decent price.

A modified stock ROM should be simple and I don't think CM11 will be too difficult either. I'm hoping to start working on this tablet soon.

I like what andronoob did with the custom rom for my old RK3066 tablet. I just bricked it and I am look for a replacement.

                      Battery

Is it just me, or does the battery charge really slowly on this model and also run down quickly, even when turned off?

I found the problem... I was trying to charge it with one of my Samsung phone chargers... this thing won't work right if you don't use the charger that came with it.

I've been thinking about tinkering more with mine, but I've decided that I'm going to wait for the KitKat upgrade that Nextbook claims is coming next month before I release anything.

pretty sure I won't get ota lol

Well I'm pretty sure I won't get ota if there is one. I've already deleted system apps that aren't needed. Just couldn't deal with all the bloat this came with. But so far I really like it, been a nice basic tablet. By the way can anyone pull the live wall paper picker system app. I accidently deleted mine removing bloat.
