I just applied both OTA updates and it's working now

Sure enough, the first update gave me the flashing issue again, but the second one fixed it.
So whatever it was, it's gone. Did you try/find anything, or is this pure luck?

Last night I powered down the box using the on screen power button. This morning when I powered up, the Ethernet connection was not working again. I switched to wifi and got notice that an update is available. Cool, I accepted the update, it downloaded the update, but failed to install. Tried a couple of more times, then finally read the reason for the failure. "system/build.prop has unexpected content". Bingo, it dawned on me that I had changed my build prop by changing the DPI from 160 to 240. Changed it back to 160, the the update installed correctly.

After the update, my Ethernet connected again. I powered down the box using the on screen power button, and waited a few minutes before powering it up again. This time it connected to the Ethernet. Tried the same thing again, but this time I pulled the power plug and waited a couple of minutes and plugged it back in. Ethernet connected right away. Perhaps this solves the Ethernet not connecting issue.

After the update, the icons and fonts are perfect, no need to change the DPI from 160 to 240, that problem is solved.

Connected the box back to my Harmon Kardon A/V receiver via HDMI, still no audio. I tried the default settings and the HDMI passthrough setting, but no audio.

Also, the Rockchip "settings" icon never worked prior to this update, now it is working.

Stock remote,
The top buttons, the "media" button brings up the music screen.
the "music" button brings up the Video screen.
the "web" button brings up the browser, which is correct.
the "app" button doesn't do anything.

the "mouse" button works.
the "mute" button works.
the "menu" button brings up something, but not a menu.
the "home" button works
the "volume" buttons work.
the "return" button works.
the "directional and OK" buttons work.
the "numerical" buttons work.
depressing and holding the "power" button brings up "Power Off" and "Silent Mode"
Clicking "Silent Mode" sound is off or on.

All my version doesn't know this command

BTW: update an OTA (file exist also at /mnt/external_sd) via SD card doesn't work

Not enough free space on /system to apply patches.

Mad really how on a lot of these devices ppl cry out for otas, R89 we get this, first time I've seen such thing successfully implemented into a tv box (i think) and yet here I go with my complaint.... Lol
Much like clarkss12 I am unable to install it, but , because of all the debloating I've done, removing system apps and other useless stuff within the Rom...don't have a backup so gonna need to revert to previous stock Rom, apply ota and then start over....

Have tried to remove the patches from ota.zip but no joy, sane probs I encountered when trying to make my own flashable zip, even after downloading the previous ota file oman uploaded and making sure mine followed suit still get the not a valid file msg...

Hope we can find a work around to make the dev process easier for inexperienced fools like me.

BTW:
on the one hand I can understand to tinker with/at the system, but at the other hand I can't, because how do you (and every other) want to test a system and determine system issues if you can't rule out that these issues made by your self?

Even though I don't have this box I am going to get this recent OTA and make a flashable ROM from it.

no_spam, the reason you cannot apply OTA from sdcard is because it is a "patcher", that is it is going in and patching binaries, APK, etc. Seems this is not allowed on stock recovery. BUT..... I think I can make sdcard flashable ROMs.... we shall see.

At a minimum I will make a flash tool ROM that has all the latest updates.

EDIT.... never mind, I see Oman is going to upload the full ROM.
But again I will work more on flashable ZIP ROMs and patches.

THX... but to get the OTA zip isn't a problem but to use it again "manually"...

Because the screen says something like "if I keep it, it could be, that the system try again to install it" I placed it back to the directory, but find no way to force the system to use it again (manually)...

Try this. Install the reboot app and reboot to recovery. Then try to install the zip from recovery.

Also another thing to try. Rename the zip to update.zip or update.img and put it on the root of the sdcard (not in a directory).
This may kick off the updater. That works on RK3188.

But I hadn' tried to rename (leave '107k4106.zip')...

BTW: during the download I can't find it (find -name *.zip) ... only after done update at '/mnt/external_sd'...

Bricked mine device

Hi,
I just tried to clean-install the updated rom and bricked mine device.
First I flashed it through the first method (loader device), the log was fine but it didn't boot.
Then I retried a few times with the two-holes-shortening method 2 (maskrom), tried both update_R89_108k4107_0903 and update_R89_107k4106 and, still, got nothing.
It flashes, verifies, says that everything fine than reboot and that's it. Can't get neither recovery nor the system. My receiver's indicator (connected with hdmi) seems to get signal for a fraction of second than immediately loses it...

Is there anything more I could try? Something that may allow me to do a full restore including bootloader, formatting and re-partitioning?
