OK here we go again.... We know boot.img was the problem and now I can make that.

So I too a big step! Maybe too big but we will see.

This is a full ROM kit.
1) System is now ext3 RW
2) Boot.img updated to mount the new system.img as ext3
3) Setup is now rooted permissions
4) SU and Superuser APK for RK28 is injected
5) Boot screen updated and bootanimation

Remember full ROM flash. Erase IDB and check the loader box.
If this does not work then we take some steps back again but I sure hope it does.
If this does work next test will be to inject google play!

Flashed and it ran thru formatting.
When it attempted to boot the Stock Polaroid screen appeared momentarily followed by Damo's screen.
And there it hangs. I pressed the reset pin and powered up to the same thing.

I am going to flash again and try. If that does not work I will re download and try again.

Hmmmm.... so the boot screen shows. Do you get a boot animation? It should look like the boot screen but the eyes on the little green android should blink and at the bottom is should say "loading please wait". Let me know if you get that second screen with loading please wait.

OK I have some more ideas. Maybe even if system is ext3 it also needs the CRC.

So what I will do next if give you a new ROM that still is cramfs but should have root (SU and super users).
You just wont be able to write to /system. So we can step and back and then step forward.

OK I do see a CRC added to the CRAMFS system.img. So it's possible it always needs it. RK29 flash tool does not.

So this ROM is back to cramfs for system. But I gave /data RW and root permissions. I also put in RK28 SU and Superuser.apk

Flash this ROM complete again. Erase IDB and click the loader.
To test if you have root, download some root file explorer, titanium back, or something that will ask for root permissions.
You can also download "terminal emulator". Launch it and at the prompt stype SU
You should get Superuser prompt, click yes and the terminal prompt should then go from a $ to a #.

OK been doing a lot of reading on RK28 and getting system as RW. It is turning out there maybe no way to make system ext3 or ext2. So that is what everyone is saying that I have read.

But there is a way to trick it by remounting a copy as ext3 and doing a cascade-joint mount.

BUt it requires aufs.ko to be compiled for your kernel! CRAP... I am no kernel person and have never compiled a kernel or a KO module for a kernel So it is beyod my capability.

Now the only issue is getting R/W to /system.

As I said it may not be possible based on studying Rk28 on other forums. Seems many have tried. WHY that is, makes no sense as /data is ext3.

But I have an idea. Want to continue trying?

I have about an hour before heading out for the day.

As for boot animation ......Honestly, I wasn't watching.
Rebooted and got the standard Polaroid screen, then your screen as mentioned before.
The grey ANDROID animation screen was the next with the shimmery letters.

OK we will forget bootanimation in later releases.

So 3 more tests to try. If we cant get them all done today not big deal.

This next test will be back to ext3 but this time I am adding the CRC at the end of system.img. I have a feeling the flash tool MUST see that. I also for now have reduced the system of system by 1/2 since it doesnt need to be that big for this tablet.

You will flash this as an entire ROM again erasing IDB and checking the loader.

If that does not work, I am going to try ext2 and see as the 2nd test. IF that does not work I am afraid you are stuck with a non-writable system. Sorry best I can do if ext3 or ext2 do not work.

Final test will be going back to cramfs but getting Google Play market installed for you and testing that.

Then we make the final production ROM. I will clean stuff up, and make a production ROM.

FYI this is on Gingerbreade 2.3.1 correct? e.g. if you go into settings and about device, What does it say the Android version is?

Yep, doesnt look like system as ext3 is going to ever work on RK28
I see posts where many have tried.

Tomorrow I will try ext2. Yaffs is a possible but I bet your kernel doesnt support it either so I probably wont waste my time on it.

So after the ext2 test, we will just leave it as cramfs for system. Since you have root and su now I think your probably plenty happy?

But I have clean up to do for a production ROM.
1) The parameter file needs to change as I am wasting alot of NAND memory when I expanded system expecting ext3. So we need to get that back down to size and get some of your memory back. I will leave the /data size as 1gig (800 megs) so you have plebty of app space!
2) Remove junk from the ROM
3) Get Google Play

I can't believe that the infamous Finless is willing to let something like a little RK28 ext3 compatibility issue stop him.
Does the fact of it running Android 2.2.1 make a difference ya think?

As I has said before, No Worries. This is going to be a back up unit to my phone to save battery use. Mostly for music and a few apps, internet where I can get WiFi

On another note, have you created a v1.5 ROM for PMID700? 3 of my kids have those. 2 are running v1.4

Yes I think your kernel will just not mount system as ext3. It doesnt make sense since /data is ext3 but after reading pages and pages where people have tried, the only way to get system as RW is to trick it with aufs.ko of which I cannot compile. If I can find a aufs.ko binary module for Froyo 2.2.1, then I bet I can get it.

I am not done looking just yet and we will try ext2 tomorrow.

I will say this... you are lucky that is 2.2.1 or you would not get google play either! They only support now 2.2.x and higher!

So tonight later I will make you a cramfs ROM with Google Play and you can try it when you have time.


Yes I am beta testing 1.5 on Nextbook now since they won the poll. Then over the next week I will do 1.5 for all the ROMs I have made to date.

p.s. can you please test one more time for me the boot animation on ROM Test9. It should work.
At first boot, you should see the boot screen follow by a screen that looks just like it but says loading at the bottom and the green android eyes should blink.
