not to mention he needs access to the 108K4 source so he can update to support the different NAND etc.

In my personal use case and opinion, android on the box is fun lets you do a lot of shit but in the end I just want the box to play movies and watch tv - xbmc.

Using xmbc in android gives me: a few crashes, annoying notifications (email, etc - I know I can disable them, but hey!), short but systematic sound blackouts, streams only playing sound and no video, soem unexpected shutdowns, ... a headache
I was 1 click away from putting my S89 on sell.

Edit: At least one thing android xbmc can't do is to adjust the screen rate to the movie rate. Might not seem important but makes a difference if you like to watch a movie as you suppose to (and not like a soap opera frame rate piece of crap - even more now that tv do frame interpolation)
I have some similar questions. I used so far normal PC (linux + xbmc) which is damaged now (probably main board) and I had problems with some movies. Occasionally when I started to watch some stream movies, mostly from ebaumsworld addon I could see only black screen, sound go normally. Nothing after this I could do, clicking on next movie or same movie again makes XBMC freeze, only restart of whole PC helped (XBMC Frodo 12.2 I think it was). Right now I have new Tronsmart Vega S89-H on android system 4.4 + XBMC 13.1 and this thing exists also here (blank screen occasionally), however there is possible to turn on next movie or same movie again, without restarting, so on android there is no any problem with this.

I would like to ask about few things how it looks on these tv boxes under linux
          1) blank screen issue & sound move on - hang on on my previous normal PC (linux) and only restart PC heled, on XBMC on android is OK, how does it look on these devices under linux ?
          2) screen settings (contrast, brightness) - not working in XBMC on android, its important to me, on previous PC xbmc with linux these settings worked normally, works also here ?
          3) DTS / DD HD passthrough ? Will it be possible on S89-H under XBMC linux or android ?
          4) is possible (or will be possible) to have linux and android in one device and switch between ?
          5) does remote controls working normally in linux, like on android tv boxes ?
          6) power on / power off from remote possible in linux ? on android its possible to put device in sleep mode, no real power off / on (at least not from remote), its a bit crazy, I have to turn off device manually because in sleep mode my HDD on USB is working all the time
          7) web browser with flash is possible only on android ?
          8) are there any other issues comparing to android XBMC ? are there any other good things in linux, comparing to android, than auto hz frequency ?

Sorry for my not best english and maybe a bit noob questions, but I hope someone will explain me this things.

you are asking alot of things. A lot which aren't really relevant to this thread. i will say stanes AMLinux will give you the best xbmc expierience so far on these boxes. you wont have android or a flash enabled browser but according to oman amlogic is planning on releasing and armhf kernel towards the end of the month and stane will be compiling a dual boot android/linux (hopefully full linux distro). the future is looking good especially since the devs contributions are being incorperated into the latest android firmware being released by belink/oman.

Thanks for few answers. Well, I didn't find any other "linux" thread for devices based on amlogic. I am not sure does normal XBMC, on linux, works exactly same on every device based on different boards, processors etc. I am a bit noob in android/linux, all I want is working device, mostly for movies only in XBMC, if possible something extra then why not (like web browser etc). I had many questions but unfortunately there are many issues with these tv boxes (I didn't expect so many) so my questions are I think important and I am sure it will help others.

your questions and comments are definitely important. However, it seemed like you were talking about linux on a pc. I guess I'm confused about the device your talking about, or xbmc in general, or linux in general, or stanes firmware. It wasn't really clear. Firmware for these boxes for both android and linux are progressing very well. Devs are working on fixing all the quirks. If the problem pertains to this firmware and xbmc then this is the correct thread. Also use stanes xbmc if you have android firmware www.stane1983.com in the dowload section (4.4.2 version not 4.2.2 version) not the one on xbmc.org or frodo. Most everything is stable with his build. Haven't had any problems with playback at all. If you do mess around with settings. Hope this helps bud

I was talking about one issue from my old PC on linux with XBMC frodo 12.2. Its gone now.
Actually I have Tronsmart Vega S89-H with 4.4.2 Android 107k4 and XBMC 13.1.
I don't have any issues with playback, all works fine to me (except no 24hz, but I read it is in 108k4).

I am not sure should I stay with Android (XBMC is missing video auto refresh rate, also not working "brightness" and "contrast" options), in other hand I remember this issue with black screen from my old PC (linux, xbmc frodo) which is not case anymore on actual system (on Android). Maybe will be possible as you said, to have 2 systems. I asked here because I can see only one thread with linux software (for amlogic). I don't know is Stanes software the only one, but it looks like it is, so if I would like to change system on my Tronsmart from Android to Linux I guess it has to be Stanes system. I asked about few very concrete things about XBMC/LINUX in general, but working on this amlogic device. Such questions left:

                  ==========
                  1) blank screen issue & sound move on - hang on on my previous normal PC (linux) and only restart PC heled, on XBMC on android is OK (it also exist but turning on next movie or same movie again fix it), how does it look on these devices under linux ?

Without using AMlogic Linux yet I can answer you some questions just because of reading the thread:
                    1) Some people (with older devices) have the best experience with xbmc on AMlogic Linux other (with newer ones) experienced freezing and rebooting.
                    5) yes, nobody said he had problems with that.
                    8) If you didn't have one of the newer devices you xbmc should run better and smoother on Linux than on Android. Beside the auto frequency another benefit of Linux is that you can (hopefully) run a pvr backend like Tvheadend turning your TV Box in a set top box. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe you should install the rom and try for yourself. I think you can create a backup of your Android build and could quickly go back if stanes rom doesn't fit for you.

You are right. If this is easy and not dangerous for device, I can test and pick best software to my needs.
That will be easier and faster.
Last questions, these will be maybe a bit not proper in this thread but I don't understand few things about upgrading ROMs. In new ROM will be also whole system (android / linux) or this is independent ?
When I am upgrading ROM to other, I am losing whole data ? (system, apps, current configuration)
I am planning to upgrade ROM, first to 108k4 (from 107k4) - android, and later probably I will try this one - based on linux.

If you upgrade from 107k4 to 108k4 you don't lose any data if you don't wipe data and media while updating. When you switch to AMlogic (linux) it should be better to wipe both while updating. But you can create a backup (with app UPDATE&BACKUP) in Android and restore if you want to go back to Android. Also you can make a backup of your xbmc settings with an addon. So you can restore it when you have installed AMlogic. So you don't have to set up all if you switch to linux from android and wipe whole data.

if you are talking about the dual boot firmware that will come out, it will auto wipe your data. Yes there is an app in xbmc to backup userdata, and for android, titanium backup works as well.

2 - LibRetro support so I can play my retro games as well (using bluetooth joysticks).

3 - NZB client support for downloads.
I agree. But is there no way to add a repo and install an ARM build of LibRetro?

And again, no repo, so you could install SabNZBd?

                                Beelink new batch boxes

                                Hi,

I see lot of questions when I will stabilize my android and linux fw on new boxes from Beelink.

                                Thing is like this:

                                1. I have older box with everything working fine
                                2. I have complaints that it's not working/its unstable on new boxes
                                3. I don't have new box
                                4. No one even tried to contact me or opened subject to obtain me one peace of actual hardware
                                5. I might found what could cause instability which will be available for test when I upload firmwares. It could work but it might not. Oman is confused by fact that firmware works on old batches and not on new ones + Oman and I are using different sources.
                                6. From donations I collected aprox $100 for Android and Linux fw and from that amount $75 is still under my pending balance because of paypal-s $tupid policy where someone who made donation (bought me a beer) must in details of his payment click on Confirm receipt or something like that, otherwise funds stay in pending balance for 30 days from day of payment.
                                7. Next week I will receive MXIII box (1gb version) for which I can make firmware, 2gb version box I will not receive

Based on what I wrote what is conclusion of community?
If you find my work useful, buy me a beer
