Here is the only M3 recovery I could find in all of my Amlogic firmwares.

OK guys you know what to do!

      Download the above uImage_recovery
A few posts up, download the ubifs_root.zip

Put both on a fat32 freash formatted sdcard.

Boot into recovery (volume down and power).
If this recovery boots, you should then be able to install the zip and it should root you.

      My fingers are crossed!

Thanks Frank! We all hope it works!

You just realized what are .img files?

If you are too busy to read through 14 pages of our "BS", just look at the title of the thread!

Do you have some kind of AMLogic based tablet?

Most of us bought our tablets on Black Friday at Big Lots for $78.88 - not bad for a nicely built 8" tablet running ICS - even if you can't run Google Play on it. Unfortunately, we didn't realize this was not the tablet that is documented on their site, which is Rock Chip based and easily rooted. They pulled a bit of a bait and switch by introducing a new tablet design with the same model number (NEXT8P12) based on AMLogic 8726-M3 and failing to document it on their website - in fact, they say they are still working on documentation!

One guy here bought a tablet with the same model number on it that actually has a 10" display!

The only reason for owning this tablet is the price, IMHO! That said, if we can't get root on this model by January 15th I'm probably going to take three of them back to Big Lots for a full refund.

The uImage_recovery seems to boot partially into recovery (it gets past the "upgrading... please wait" screen anyways) but then goes to a black screen with an amber LED light on the tablet. Hitting power (to try and choose the first option, usually reboot) yields no results

I'm assuming I need to rename uImage_recovery to uImage_cwm so that I can use the same aml_autoscript, right?

              EDIT:
Okay, I put the following files on external SD card:
              aml_autoscript (from before)
              uImage_cwm (renamed from Frank's iImage_recovery)
              ubifs_root.zip

All I got on my tablet is the power LED turned on amber! I see ozyman got a slightly different result - I never saw any text at all on my screen - it was blank. Quick presses of the power button did nothing for me, either.

Holding the power button in turned off the LED. Interestingly, though, I tried holding it in long enough to get the tablet to boot and the LED came back on again - that was before removing the SD card. Once I removed the SD card the tablet booted normally.

EDIT 2: After reboot, the lockscreen is telling me to connect my charger because the battery is down to 10% - it was at least 80% before trying this!

No, you do not need aml autoscript. It should just boot into the recovery you put on sdcard. If you get the recovery menu try to apply zip from sdcard.

I didn't rename the recovery, or use the AML autoscript file. Simply put the new uImage_recovery cantidate and the UBIFS root zip file on a freshly formatted SD card. It gets past the "upgrading... please wait" that initially shows when entering recovery and then it hangs at a black screen with the amber light. This is the furthest I've gotten with a replacement recovery file from SDcard though so it's promising at least.

I have a feeling they also modded uboot in such a way as to lock down loading a standard recovery from booting from sdcard.

Frank said he is going to try and push to get them to release the ROM. Apperently AMlogic does not like tactics like nextbook is doing.

Might be our only hope now.

Did it drain your battery at all?

Didn't seem to drain it at all, just an unresponsive / black screen.

Okay, I renamed uImage_cwm back to uImage_recovery and got rid of aml_autoscript so the only things left on the card are Frank's two files, exactly as downloaded.

Now the tablet is not doing anything when I try to run recovery - even when plugged in. I'm thinking it might be because the battery level is now so low, so I'm going to let it charge a bit before trying again.

BTW, last time this happened the low battery was some sort of anomalous reading - within a few minutes it was back over 90% - this time it seems like it is really discharged.

Okay, the battery is charged up again - no way it was discharged to 10% and recharged fully in a little over an hour.

Anyway, I now have just Frank's files, unmodified, on the external SD card. When I try to go into recovery mode, I see the same thing ozyman did - it says "upgrading... please wait" in large, green letters at the upper left corner of the screen (adjacent to the power button), then the LED goes amber and that's all she wrote. If I hold the power button for 6-7 seconds, the LED goes out, then I can repeat the procedure and it gets to the same place - no further. I tried it a total of three times.

This is the first time I have seen that message, but maybe I was supposed to get rid of the aml_autoscript file before this.

Unless I am mistaken, this means we are running the recovery on the external SD card (vs the native recovery) but it is incompatible in some way, does that sound right?
