The CEC language issue is apparently an Android 6.0 bug. It has been reported on Nvidia shield https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/919901/shield-android-tv/language-is-going-to-chinese-by-itself-/1/

and even on the Nexus player http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-player/help/changing-languages-automatically-t3228098

There is a fix of sorts for the nexus player but it requires an adb step.https://github.com/loadrunner/language-reset
(cant test it since my s905x box hasn't arrived )

When I try to unpack the GT1 firmware I get a img failed error. Any ideas?

i made a new rom combining nexbox A95X and Mini M8 SII firmwares
mainly i have put the /system folders of the M8SII on the A95X but including the original /etc folder with bluetooth and wifi drivers for my device

now i'm testing it since 1 hour, i fixed the remote with the right .conf file and i haven't found any problem.

if all is fine i may share it on the forum if it is not against any rule.

I did it on my 3 MINIM8sII
to copy and paste on a sd card of the build.prop MINIM8sII use ES File Explorer Pro

Np short pins 29 and 30 on your nand then plug in USB to burn

there are no pins 29 and 30 in my flash
checking datasheet of my emcc i discovered that the 2 pins to short are the ones in the red rectangle in the back of the motherboard

Yes. Now i noticed that i misspelled it . Did you try the fix for the nexus player? I'm wating for the same box to arrive (a95x s905x)
