Feadback on 1.7a - fixed 'parameter'

The batch tool will only install the parameter.img that's called "parameter.img"

    Does that make sense?
Thanks - I just did that 10 minutes before reading your reply ( I guess I was 'half asleep' before flashing the first time...).
    Now all is perfect!
    Thanks!

      1.7a issue after severe testing

      Hi,
For the last several hours I have been testing my M9Pro with newly flashed 1.7a and my apps.
To my surprise I discovered that the unit reboots by itself automatically (a soul of it's own?) once it has been in standby for a while (display off). This happened a couple of times within the first hours after flashing.
Anyone else with 1.7a experienced this phenomena?
Anyone with an idea what it can be?
      Thanks
      Kastrup

      * Issue solved after re-flashing. Now all works 100%!

A newb in need of advice.. pretty please

Hi All, Total newb here who has been reading this thread with interest am am considering using the riley rom on my pipo m9 pro, I have a few questions Im hoping youll be able to help me out with before I take the plunge.

First of all my tablet came already rooted but Im not sure what version I have, when I look in the"about tablet" section it says the kernel version is "3.0.36+ root@alex-system-product-name#241 wed july 24 15:43:55 cst 2013" and that the build number is "rk30sdk-eng 4.2.2 JDQ39 eng.root.20130725.154545 test keys" Im not entirely sure what this means.

Secondly Ive seen people on this thread mentioning backing up, what exactly does this back up and how do you go about it? is there any tutorials or info online on how to do this?

Thirdly, when I go ahead and put the latest rom on my tablet will I still have the software/apps that were on it (not ones I have installed but the ones that came pre installed)

And finally, if it doesnt work (as has happened with a few posters on this thread) can I recover to my previous state, Im a little worried about ending up with a dead tablet.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help

Hello all. I've ordered my m9 pro and I'm very much looking forward to it arriving in a few days and flashing some custom roms. I have one question about this Rileyrom, does it have multi-window?

          thanks

Over 90% newb myself! I didn't do anything until there was an updated IMG available from PiPo site directly that would get me back to square one. Your M9 arrived much different than a stock M9 Pro so nobody here can know exactly what you had installed "initially". There might be something you can download from wherever you purchased that would match (probably updated by now) your starting config.

            When I google
            JDQ39 eng.root.20130725.154545
the top entry is arctablet with their custom rom from that 25-July base version. Using the Download link on that page would give you something pretty close to your startup (minus whatever else a vendor might have done). That page ends with a link to an update on 22-Aug (and probably other updates???).

If you install new firmware, you get whatever apps are already included with what you install. What I did was install Titanium Backup - Root and make a backup of my Apps & Data (to External SD) before I did anything, flashed 1.7B, re-installed Titanium Backup so that I could restore those Apps. This wasn't "easy" with the Free version as it asks about permissions, etc for each app. Pretty sure the $ version of Titanium automates this. Many other backup/restore apps would also work. I did go back to the original stock firmware when I had trouble adding a 2nd user. The Setup app wanted some number for apps that pre-installed themselves for the 1st user but if they hadn't been launched, didn't have some "certificate" file needed for the wife's account. In the end, I pretty much just abandon trying for the preinstalled apps except the original launcher and a couple others and am fine with what came in Randy's debloated 1.7B.

I didn't find any kind of tutorial for this process, but was pretty comfortable that I could get back to stock. NOTE that Titanium wants root access. YOU have that now, but wouldn't if you used the PiPo stock IMG. It wasn't too hard to root stock firmware via ADB from a Windows PC - except getting the drivers.

I was also encouraged to do this based on Randy saying in several places that it was hard to brick the RK tablet. Easy to make it unbootable, but not so hard to get back by re-installing something that does work.

            Hope that helps!

            P.S. - I do have Multi-Window and did eventually get Multi-User working.

Hi BillinCA, thanks for the detailed reply thats a lot of help. Im guessing there are some apps that my vendor added that wont be on the stock, but Im going to do a little research to find out what apps you get on the pipo stock and riley rom. Im guessing it will have everything I need and I dont really have a problem in starting afresh if this is the case. So I think Im gonna take the plunge and give it a go thanks again for the advice and for taking the time to help me out, appreciated

Thanks. And does stock multi window work with all apps or only a select few? Basically I'm trying to decide for when my tablet arrives whether to use a stock modded ROM, like this, or try to cook the M9pro kernel into Oma's multi-window ROM for rk3188. I'm not really a flashaholic, I like to find a nice setup and stick with it....

Can you share what you did to get multi-user working?

I included the build.prop line to activate multi-user, but each time I try using it, I get goofy screen's and limited functionality.

I'm using an M7 Pro and an M8 Pro...not the M9 Pro, but the fix should apply to all of these.

you just have to remove the app called provider.apk system was also needed about the build.prop

                      OK, here's the deal, folks......

There is a give or take heading in that direction. In order to run the Pipo Launcher...which looks pretty cool, but I don't think really adds much to the experience...you have to have the provision.apk in place to activate it on the first boot. After that you can delete it (I think).

If you want multi-user to work initially, the provision.apk needs to be removed.

So, I'm wondering which is more important. The Pipo Launcher or Multi-User?

I can always keep things as they are, and if you want to use multi-user...you can manually delete this app. I'll even add that to the instructions.

                      What do you think?

For me more important is multi-user ofcourse, but maybe You can make 2 different builds?

I am currently on another forum in another thread regarding using a launcher for a phone. The topic of changing launchers came up. DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Can anyone confirm that this works with us?

"If you want to install the launcher to /system IMMEDIATELY instead of after a reboot, move the apk to /system first (in order to modify permissions, as /sdcard doesn't allow permission change), change permission to rw-r--r-- and then move it to /system/app. Wait a few seconds, press HOME and your launcher should be available."

Hope this helps us somewhere. If you are experienced and feel experimental, please elaborate on this method further.

                          Thanks!

                            Pipo M9 Pro RileyROM 1.7

The discussion is centered around how to get the Pipo Launcher to work.

Pipo loads a bunch of bloat ware in their firmware. Some apps are listed as premium apps which require activation before they can be used.

I've experimented with trying to leave Pipo's fancy Windows 8 lookalike Launcher in my ROM...but it requires the activation app provision.apk.

It isn't necessary on a tablet for the launcher app to reside in the system/app folder. Many will work just as they are installed in the data/app folder...so if you want a different launcher...just install it from the App Store of your choice.

The issue is that for multi-user to work, which is a feature I've turned on in my ROM...the provision.apk has to be removed.

As time permits, I'll try to unpack provision.apk and see if I can modify it somehow.

It would be best if I were to go back to 1.7B from scratch and do it again rather than depending on memory. There were MANY unsuccessful iterations - and by the time I'd made the build.prop change, I had a 2nd user created for the wife, but max_users was still 1. Changed to 4 in build.prop, and I did NOT go through validation of all apps that had cause grief previously.

Note that my 2nd user does NOT get a Multi window choice in Settings, so I only have that on the primary user. No idea if that's how it is supposed to be though.

I DON'T recommend this route, but I started from something at least similar to
A short tutorial on how to enable multiple user mode on Android 4.2.2 AOSP-based ROMs using either a terminal emulator or an ADB toolkit.

                                but did it via
                                ADB shell setprop fw.max_users 4
                                ADB shell pm create-user usernameyouwanthere
                                Tablet rebooted itself
after create-user and maybe after setprop too? That reboot seemed to restore max_users 1, the user had been created and I repeated the setprop to 4, but couldn't complete the Google Setup ( ~ InitialActivity). When I had to reset, repeating the
                                ADB shell pm create-user SameNameAsBefore
it gave it a new UID, but hung getting configured, reset, back to max_users 1. My GUESS is that setprop only updates RAM, not build.prop (or /system was read-only and it didn't complain that it couldn't write).
Once I edited build.prop, it was fairly smooth, but I didn't exactly take notes.

Maybe I should also mention that I'd backed up stock and had restored PiPo's launcher & family to 1.7B before trying to add multi user. Somehow, the first login to the new user was trying to Install all the "preinstalled" apps and wanted the registration number for InStage apps - some of which had never been launched to create a file. I restored the stock OTA release and executed them all and made a new backup and then went back to 1.7B and restored them. Adding multi user again didn't work right, until I simply edited build.prop as shown much earlier in this thread.

I can go back to plain 1.7B and take notes, but not for a couple days. I could do it sooner if I could find a way to make a full backup of where I stand first. I'd like to have something more like gparted with complete images instead of app backups. But I don't know how to do that, or how to save what you might want after an OTA update was applied to their stock firmware (would also volunteer to do so if I could).

I do have two issues with 1.7B where you might be able to provide clues.

                                1) I am only able to run
                                F:\PIPO\RK3188_ROOT>adb version
                                Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.26
and have it find the tablet with ADB devices. ADB on the M9 is 1.0.31, but 1.0.29 and 1.0.31 on the PC don't find anything with ADB devices. Trying ADB backup isn't working, and I'm thinking it has something to do with only being able to use 1.0.26. It isn't the ADB drivers - I've tried the current Android SDK drivers (I had to mod for RK3188) on a virgin Win7 boot and get the same results. Any suggestions to not be stuck at 1.0.26?

                                2) busybox is apparently built using static libraries which prevents telnet, nslookup, ... busybox functions from using DNS to translate to an IP. Do you have access to a busybox that uses Bionic library mentioned in http://android.stackexchange.com/que...e-to-nslookup?
I did notice that the datestamps on /system/lib files are 9/13 for most things that aren't symbolic to busybox and all the busybox are 9/17:
                                Code:
lrwxrwxrwx root shell 2013-09-13 02:33 notify -> toolbox
                                lrwxrwxrwx root     root              2013-09-17 07:20 nslookup -> /system/bin/busybox
                                -rwxr-xr-x root shell 71400 2013-09-13 02:33 ntfs-3g
Ping isn't busybox and works fine in a Terminal window, so it isn't DNS generally in Terminal.
