I have an M8, currently on XBMC 13.2 and im trying to update to the new version. I download the .tar file, extract it in my FAT32 sd card. I boot the M8 into recovery but it never starts the update. It takes me to the recovery page. When i try manually to locate the update file i get the error of "no such file or directory". Any ideas what im doing wrong?
I managed to update to kodi with the .tar file in the end. My problem now is that my HW acceleration does not work on Kodi. I get black screen. When i switch to software acceleration everything is ok. Is there any way to fix it?

It's the zip file you need to extract to your sdcard not the .tar file. The .tar file is for manual update through samba share.

Thanks. I updated with samba to kodi but unfortunately all videos were black screen. I switched to software acceleration and they played fine. Is it normal?

Try updating with zip file in recovery. That should work.

Hi MikeD. I have tried to update with the zip file but it didn't work. I extracted it in my SD card, i hold the recovery button in the A/V port, the device boots but it doesn't start updating, it stays in recovery.
I manually select update from sd card but the files are not recognised from the system.
I would really appreciate your help as i have been trying to update for days now with no result.

The error i'm getting when i try to update manually from Recovery is the below:
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard' E:Unable to mount '/data' E:Unable to mount '/sdcard' Installing 'external_sd/s89_root_update.zip'... set_perm: some changes failed E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/external_sd/s89_root_update.zip' Error flashing zip '/external_sd/s89_root_update.zip' Updating partition details... E:Unable to mount '/data' E:Unable to mount '/sdcard' ...done

Just unpack this file from OP and copy the extracted files to root of your sdcard. If updating don't start automatically after booting into recovery select "Update from EXT" and choose file "OpenELEC-Amlogic.M8.arm-5.0.3-update.zip". If that don't work maybe try using another sdcard.

Hi MikeD. I managed to update my M8 with the method you provided me and it worked. Thanks for that!
Unfortunately, my HW acceleration didn't work. All videos are black. In order to be able to see videos i need to go to System - Settings - Video - Acceleration, and deselect the option "Allow hardware acceleration (amcodec).
I would really appreciate any ideas.

Have you made fresh install (wipe data/factory reset in recovery)? Did you try playing videos with different codecs?
I don't have these problems so I don't know why it doesn't work for you. Try different video settings (fps sync/resolution). Maybe there could be also a problem with your tv.
