    Root in step by step

    Hello guys,

I am happy for this thread as I want to go to buy Nextbook 8SE with AMlogic tomorrow. However I am little bit confused about the way how to root this device. PLEASE, could someone there summarize how to root this device easily and successfuly ?

    Many thanks!

      It's Black Friday again...

Guys, I have been keeping something from you.

I got up at 5:30AM on Black Friday to buy two of these tablets - I had to go to two different stores to do it, and my wife didn't even know I was gone!

I started one of them up the same day and played around with it for a couple of days, then started up the other one for my wife. The second one only lasted 2-3 days before it would no longer boot - it just hung during boot with Nextbook giving us the finger! If you have watched one of these tablets boot, you know what I mean.

At the time, only one of the two stores I bought them from had more in stock, so I did an exchange for a new one. That one has been working fine for about six weeks now, but, at the time, I was worried that one of them might take a crap again and they wouldn't have any to exchange it for. So I called the same store a few days later - they only had one left so I bought it and have been hanging on to it as a backup.

My intent was (and still is) to return the third tablet, unopened, to Big Lots on January 15th, which is the last day I can do it. I was thinking that maybe someone here might want it, so here's the deal.

I am a seller on **** so PayPal will get their pound of flesh, regardless. That said, I would take $90 (I paid $87.27, including tax, and PayPal will get $2.91) plus shipping for it. Included in that price will be a cash receipt from a Big Lots in Tucson dated 11/23/2012, so you will have proof-of-purchase for warranty purposes.

Even if you can find one at a Big Lots now, their regular price is $89.99, and that doesn't include tax.

If you were looking for another one or know someone who is, especially now that we are on the verge of having a rooted ROM available for it, send me a PM with your address and I'll tell you what the shipping charge would be.

If nobody has claimed it by January 15th, it's going back to Big Lots... unless I can convince my wife we need to keep it!

This is in ROM manager and ClockWork to fix permissions when porting a ROM or update.zip where permissions are not set in the script properly. I do not believe running this will do anything for you and in fact could hose you up.
Also last time I used this was on Gingerbread and later when I tried it on ICS my tablet would no longer boot. ICS and above tightened up permissions on files for security reasons. Back on gingerbread it alsmost did not matter what the heck the permissions were e.g. files could be rwrwrwrw and everything would still work. On ICS this is not longer the case and in fact can keep you from booting. So again.. I would not mess with this. What do you think it will do for you? Certainly it is not to "root" you even more. Again the idea is to fix permissions for ROMs that are not correct.

        Make sense?

        Bob
I just want to set permissions to whatever stock ICS is expecting. I have applications that will not even install, and others that will not run, and I suspect that it is because of non-standard permission settings. We know they screwed around with the /data directory and probably locked down whatever they could to prevent root.

I haven't done anything yet because I was looking for your input. Would you be willing to take a look at a recursive directory listing (ls -l -R) to see if anything looks non-standard? Maybe you could compare it to one of your own tablets running ICS.

EDIT: I attached a zip containing the file created on my tablet by executing the following as superuser in Terminal on my tablet:
        ls /data -l -R > /mnt/sdcard/data_perms

I'm very excited to see this thing rooted! Can't wait for a ROM that makes this thing usable. Just wanted to chime in and say thank you to eegor and bob and everyone else that has had a hand in testing for this project.

Awesome! I've been anxiously following this thread for the last week. Thank you to everyone involved for all your hard work.

I scooped a Nextbok Premium 7 se 8gb from walmart a few weeks ago thinking it was the rocker chip, but it turns out it is the ARMv7 with the AMLOGIC Meson3 8726M hardware.

Hopefully this root will lead to a root for my Nextbook.

            Good job everyone!

How much was the 7P12 from Walmart? It has 8GB internal memory? How much RAM? Does it have HDMI output?

What are the resolution and dimensions of the display?

Is yours the model that comes with Google Play installed?

              EDIT: Is this it?

Thats it exactly! It's a great little tablet too. My brother-in-law got a kindle fire for christmas. Comparing my Nextbook to his Kindle Fire, I like the Nextbook more.

It does have Google Play installed, thank God.

Once I get it rooted, I'll be totally satisifed!

I know your resolution is 800x480, but what are the actual height and width dimensions of the display and of the tablet overall?

ok I busted out the ruler:

Holding the tablet so it looks like the crudely rendered rectangle here:

The length of the top edge is 7 1/2 inches.
The height of the side edges is 4 1/2 inches.
The thickness of the tablet is a smidgen under 1/2 inch.

The display area is 3 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches wide.

The tablet weighs slightly more than my fiance's Third generation Amazon Kindle.

Overall, I am happy with my Nextbook's build. It doesn't feel cheap or flimsy. The touch screen is snappy and responsive. The power and volume buttons are tight and springy.

The price was fantastic too. I was looking for an Android tablet that wouldn't set me back more than $100 as I let my 6 year old son play with it whenever he wants. He's not intentionally destructive or anything, but he is a six year old boy and the tablet has held up very well thus far.

I really hope we see a root for this Next7p12-8G sometime in the near future!

I agree with you - the build quality of these tablets is far better than I would expect for the price.

The eight inch tablet is exactly 8" x 6" overall. the display is about 6 3/8" x 4 5/8", and it is only about 3/8" thick. It weighs a little more than a pound.

So, it is slightly taller than the seven inch tablet and it is 4x3 vs widescreen (roughly 16x9).

Do you have access to a USB 3G modem dongle and an adapter cable that will allow you to connect it to your tablet? If so, you can probably root yours the way I did mine. It would be a good idea if someone who has one of the seven inch tablets could do this so Bob can get a system dump from it, rather than assuming he can tweak the ROM for an eight inch tablet to make one for yours. Just because they are similar doesn't mean that they are compatible from a hardware standpoint, especially since they apparently had some trouble getting Google to approve their eight inch design (ours) but they were able to get approval for yours. It is likely that there are some significant differences between the two designs.

you are of no help to us. please wait for the thing we are working very thoroughly to find. please read the entire thread.

the only working method at this moment is the 3g dongle.
                          @eegorr
would it work with any usb mobile data modem? i have a clear-fi 4g usb modem. it would be nice to make a separate thread with your 3g root procedure if you dont mind.

ive been fiddling with the android restore exploit. it has made my tablet unable to boot twice but factory reset in the 3e recovery fixes it. but that definitely means its gaining write access to some important files somewhere. looking into it.

and this tablet is quite alot better than the rk2908 tablet i broke before thisone hehehe

I used a Huawei E220, but I would think that any USB modem would work as long as you have data service to go with it. I tried using mine without installing my SIM card and the tablet did not detect it at all. If have an OTG adapter cable, it is worth a try. Be sure to let us know if it works or not, and let me know if anything is missing or incorrect in the procedure I wrote up.

I don't know if it warrants a new thread since it is only intended to be an interim root method, but here is a link to my post detailing the procedure:
Rooting procedure for Nextbook NEXT8P12 (AMLogic) - USB 3G dongle method.

It is message 361, at the top of page 19. Maybe Bob could make it a sticky at the top of our thread - is that even possible?

BTW, which tablet do you have? In what way is the AMLogic version better than the Rockchip version?
