If you're getting signature failed errors it's because the sdcard recovery is not being recognized and your tablet is booting into stock recovery. Are you sure that the files are extracted to the root of an external sdcard (removable micro sd) and not the /sdcard internal device directory? You should have those 4 files plus the root.zip file on a removable micro sdcard.

Do not use the "upgrade" tool included in the app drawer of the tablet, turn the device off and boot into recovery via volume down and power buttons. I'm pretty sure the nextbook 8se / 8p12 I have was a September serial number and the custom recovery method from that xda post worked right away for me.

      Actually I have three files (factory_update_param.aml, u-boot-aml-ucl.bin, uImage_recovery) plus root.zip equals 4.

Yep, I'm pretty sure I did everything right. Maybe, because I first tried the 'upgrade' method it now remembers the failure and I'm stamped forever! I'll try again later. Right now it's 79 degrees outside and I'm going biking on the San Felasco trails just north of Gainesville. Gotta clear out my mind for awhile.

The recovery may not work for a 7p12, but it's worth a shot!

              problems

Hi I have been following this thread and since I don't have my OTG cable yet. I have been trying the XDA method but every time I start the tablet holding the volume down button I just get the green android robot laying on his back with a hatch open and a red triangle with ! on it...
I don't really understand what that means.
              Any ideas ??

You got it to work with a nextbook 7p12? Formatting the micro sd is generally a good idea but I didn't bother that time.

Thanks Ozymandiaz for the instructions and mixed emotions to posters for getting me more interested in this

Here's hoping that the alternate recovery can be of use to the bricked people...

OK I have the Next7p12-8G and I think I just rooted it.
New to this so have some patience.
I ran the files as listed and the thing booted up with the "Upgrading Please wait "
then booted up ,no errors or messages at all, all my app were gone for a few seconds then reloaded.
Went to Astro and tried to find Super user apk but couldn't find it so I downloawded it from playstore.
                          Loaded finew.
Questions is did I root this thing or not ?
                          Any easy way to tell

The recovery method should have placed superuser.apk in /system/app if it worked, but unless you have a file named "su" in the /system/bin or /system/xbin directory you're not rooted.

From reading all this it appears the 8P is using standard google test keys for signature verification. We in fact know the 7P is not so I doubt this will work.

However if it does at all, it might be possible to use this to root and then when rooted with 8P uboot, flash back to 7P system and uImage keeping the 8P's uboot. Again wishful thinking but worth making sure!

So I really need to know what exactly happens when you try this on the 7P. Man on his back? Invalid siganature? etc... seems a little unclear at this point.

FYI, you can always install superuser.apk from google unrooted! It's just an APP. But without su binary as was said above, your not rooted.
