I am new to the forum, I was over at xda and saw this post and did not know if it could be of any use.

I'm seeing a lot of confusion on the forums about the Nextbook Big Lots released on Black Friday so I see it worth making a thread over. This Nextbook does *not* use the Rockchip RK2918. If you look at the build info and do a little research...

    My tablet is a next8p12

Does someone want to give this a try? See post #42.

I'm guessing you will get a signature error, but who knows?

just unistall it from card if you want anything off sd card, if stuck do power +(-), it will reset. checking out gapps now...

Wow... I'll be damned, it worked on the 8p12 / 8se! Boot into recovery with the files from that zip on the root of the external sdcard and it'll give a black screen. Give it about two minutes on that screen and it'll start the normal boot process and show an "android is upgrading" dialog. As soon as it finished booting up I checked /system/bin and had the su binary. Nice find! I hadn't tried it before when they first posted that on xda assuming that we'd just get signature errors. Thanks for testing and confirming Stellsvile!

                  Re: Nexbook AMlogic root WORK!

I'm totally new to rooting. I have the Next7P12 with AMlogic Chip. Is it safe to put a Next8 ROM on a Next7?

                      Explain Boot into recovery

                      Hello everyone!
I've been following this since early December , looking forward to this exciting day.

As a rank noobie and new to this tablet, will someone please step me through the "boot into recovery" procedure on the Nextbook8p12se. I already have the files unzipped and in my root on the external sd card. I understand that the root.zip file must not be unzipped, but left as is.

I tried to use the built-in upgrade app and the install began but was aborted because of failing signature recognition. I just haven't been able to coordinate the pin-hole, vol and power buttons properly for "boot into recovery". Somehow that part was never clear to me.

Thanks in advance. Will be happy to report success when that happens.

Unzip the patch.zip file from that link on XDA, they added some redundant folders when creating the zip file but once you get to the directory with root.zip and the other files copy those over to the root of the *external* SD card directory. As you mentioned leave root.zip as-is. Turn off the tablet (you'll probably want the power cord plugged in to be safe) then hold the Volume down button and push the power button. You should shortly see an "Upgrading... Please wait" prompt in green and then it'll go to a black screen. Don't panic, give up, try to reboot, start playing russian roulette, etc because that black screen will turn into a normal bootup screen with the Nextbook logos after a minute or two. When the tablet loads you'll be rooted, you can verify by using Astro to navigate to the /system/bin directory and find the SU binary inside along with superuser.apk in the /system/apps folder.

I'm getting some errors on google apps (maps not available in the play store, gmail and Chrome fail to run) but that's probably because I got lazy and just copied the contents of the Gapps zip file to their respective locations on the device instead of installing it via ADB. I'll mess with it more when I get home, but it's definitely rooted and Titanium Backup works just fine for removing bloatware.

still get signature failed on the next7p12

                            Comment

Lovely, they must use a different set of signature keys for each device they produce. Does the 7p12 have the init-pppd.sh file in /system/etc with rw permissions? If so and if the device supports usb host mode / usb otg then you still have the 3g dongle exploit as a way to get root.

                                same result: signature failed

                                Same screen failed signature.
I'm disappointed again. It may be because I have a YF0912. Hmmmm that looks like Sept 2012 to me. Most of you have YF1012....Oct 2012. Could they have changed signature key every month?

                                Any ideas?

I see on here and xda forum that I am still not alone with this tar baby. At least some of us are rooted. I'll be looking for 3g dongle and OTG method IF I hear someone with my serial number has rooted with that method not before. For all I know that ppp file is locked on my tablet also.

Has anyone failed the 3g dongle root?

Thanks everyone for all the work!
