I don't have source, so I can't rebuild with the needed precompiler directives. Also, there's apparently a trick to mounting Bluetooth USB dongles on-the-fly that only ODROID seems to have figured out.

This custom ROM development is frustrating, isn't it? Welcome to my world. :-) The short answer is that it's extremely tedious and I don't have the process documented anywhere. At some point I should correct that, but I just haven't had the time. There's no way I could do it justice here.

I just tried the 20170919 OEM image and it worked on my device with SEC 652 B041 eMMC and there was no problem.

Sadly, i made a rookie mistake and the USB Burning Tool did not worked at first. I saw a video on how to use this tool and used the option of Force Erase All. I did not check the Erase Keys option.

Now the Widewine L1 / HDCP 1.x are gone. No Netflix. I can watch Netflix in other ways, but that would require another device, plugs, cables, etc.

I later installed this ROM, and it worked. Netflix still is gone, but now i can watch HBO Go and the user interface is better. Using the Meecol TV remote is also better(even when it lacks the mic).

So far, there is no freeze, but i have only watched like 1 hour of video.

        Edit

i do have had freezes, i have to unplug the power and connect it again. It happened on my stock OEM ROM.

tomorrow i will be checking its stability

We really should document that Force Erase All wipes the secure key storage. I hadn't realized that.

So from all this posts, problematic boxes only work good with 0829 firmware which they shipped with. Any other ROM, including original, will kill it.

Eventually, it can be used for Libreelec, and that would be also from SD card cause installing to internal EMMC will also kill it.

Yes. That is pretty much it.

Only work "as best they can" with original 0829 - May still freeze randomly.

How can I factory reset this box if it doesn't have a reset button? After 2 days my box just frooze at boot. Pathetic and a waste of money...

Guest yeah, sadly it seems to be the case. It may be good to set a warning on first post so others could learn from my experience.

But at the same time, being my box in a very likely bad branch(SEC 652 with 20170829 firmware), i wonder if flashing the 20170919 firmware with the option of Force Erase All can fix the eMMC issues at the cost of wiping the Widewine Keys.

I am currently watching Youtube and using Tune In radio, the closest i have been to freezes are the times when i try to install a new app.

None of the latest boxes without a Reset button have had any freezing issues.

                What was your original FW

If the box is only 2 days old then start a CS Ticket as soon as you can.

Well let's just say for now I am a happy man!
To recap, I got a SEC 713 with original firmware 20170815, from GeekB.
I decided to take the plunge last night.
First OEM FW 20170919 using SDcard + reset button install method.
                  Success! Seemed to work nicely.
Then I proceeded with the ATV firmware 20171001.
First time I used a 2-in-1 card reader with the SDcard I already used, and put the ATV firmware in a seperate folder.
Did OTA update through menu, and it rebooted, then it got stuck on MECOOL logo.
Ok, I got slightly nervous, but it was caused by the fact that it could not access the firmware update.
Got a clean USB stick and put the ATV firmware on it. Ticked "wipe data" and went ahead.
5 minutes later, I am running ATV firmware! First boot takes a long time, don't panic.

Nice work on the firmware Magendanz! I did already notice a small problem: there is an app for both android and iOS (from google) that allows you to control your Android TV + use voice commands.
This app finds the MECOOL (yay!) but then it does not manage to connect. Any thoughts on this matter?

Yes, I had to revert to an older version of the Android TV Remote service because current ones would crash on machines without Bluetooth. At one point I had it working fine with the 6.0.1 version, but apparently I broke it again with the latest release.

Firstly, thanks to everyone for all the great info on this thread. I purchased 2 units from banggood. When they arrived I opened the first one and it was a new version unit without the reset switch (and I assume with the Kingston eMMC). I flashed the latest version of ATV ROM to it without any issues and dual booted libreelec. However the second unit has a reset switch so I opened it up and it has a SEC713 eMMC. It's running version 20170815. I've seen that most people that had issues with SEC713 had an original ROM of 20170829. So I'm a little unsure what the best thing to do next with this box.

You can try it out for a test as is and see if you get any freezes.

If you don't get freezes, you can test FW updating with the original recommended FW zip using update app

We have got the feedback from our QC team, we suggest you should restore factory settings in the system settings.

If it still does not work, we suggest you should upgrade the system: https://mega.nz/#F!gqgXwSCa!sFNDXrV_EMzAYAcJ68dV0w

Thank you Guest for your excellent work. This firmware is really AWESOME. It runs very, very smooth and, for those who are in a doubt (yet): INSTALL RIGHT NOW!!!

I've tried the original (stock) firmware for a week and it works. But the apps aren't updated and that's really a turndown. So... Magendanz ROM is mandatory in this case.

By the way, how do I make to update when a new version is available (since there's no UPDATE app, as the stock ROM)?

Thx again for your SUPERB efforts.

                        Thanks for the suggestions.

The box was stable on 815 firmware. I ran HD youtube for over an hour without issues.

I struggled to get this box to update. Holding the reset switch seemed to do nothing. I eventually managed to get it to update via the update app and applied "M8S_PRO+-ota-20170919.150557.V0619"
So far so good. No freezes or crashes but I have only been using it for about 15 minutes. I guess if the box is stable then I can give the the ATV ROM a go.

Edit: not sure if this is important but in the end I used a version of the firmware that did not have recovery.img or factory_update_param.aml included, just the firmware zip alone.
