Mounting points names.
Well, I will quote myself

After correcting these little things can be the best android (XBMC) media center
2. Names of mounting points of external USB devices are always sda1, sda2, .... regardless of the real partition names.
I currently have 3 hard drives connected through a hub to my PopcornHour (Drives formatted in NTFS partition named "films", "series", "concerts".), and PopcornHour sees them as a resource named "films", "series", "concerts".
I tested it in amlinux - is just as well.
In MXIII Android TV Box these discs appear to be "sda1", "sda2", "sda3", but after the power is turned off and back on again, prev "sda1" is now "sda2", or "sda3", depending on the speed of activation of the disks.
And if you create a media library in XBMC based on the drive name (can not be otherwise?), Suddenly the whole library sucks.
It's not a big problem if you are using MXII only as a simple player. You know, you connect a USB stick and play the movie. But if you use XBMC in library mode, sorry it did not work well.
This is the biggest problem for me. It contradicts the idea of building a media center based on XBMC installed on this item.
And.... what about passthrough DTS HD and Dolby True HD?
You know such an application?

Maybe it can be done by installing an application.

I had the same problem as you, when I tried to load a movie in xbmc after I restarted the box. With this application, I'm happy now.

Webview and videos
As an app developer for a digital signage company, I ran into something that was very interesting. I use webview in my app and with video the app always crashed. Now at first i didn't know but now i do. I had to add this permission in the app to get it to work.
<uses-permissionandroid:name="android.permission.WAKE_LOCK"/>
Whats odd is no other device had this issue without it but for some reason amlogic had to have it when running video with webview. This could be the cause to some apps crashing when video is played because their permissions dont include this permission. I dont know if its a bug but could fix a lot of apps.

If those hdd's contain you media and you use XBMC then you can re-locate those drives somewhere else and use XBMC to add smb, nfs or whatever you use as new source, that won't require root i think.
As for relocating the hard drives and sharing their content from a PC, well here's the thing:
In Windows 7 (not sure about Win 8 as I haven't tested it yet), if you share a folder over the network, that folder can NOT be accessed or modified from any other PCs or devices but only from the PC it had been shared on! I noticed this when sharing folders in external HDDs.
For example, if you share a folder (with say... 2TB of data) on a Windows PC, and somehow lose access to that computer, or simply want to use that external HDD (which contains the shared folder) on another computer, Windows won't let you open it and says "You do not have permission to access this folder".
2TB of data... just gone!
You can try that for yourself. That's the reason I avoid sharing folders like that in Windows.
Originally posted by Veronica View PostI have used that too and also XBMC file manager to copy/move files, but i realized is faster copy the file from my pc using windows explorer and a Native SMB server on Android side.

Exactly. Having the HDDs show up in Windows explorer as a network destination is just the best way to easily move files around. Which Android app do you use for SMB sharing?
On the other hand i've never shared folders from external hard drives connected to Windows pc so i see your point, but in my android box and linux mini pc is a different story, it works great and i have moved my hdd few times between them plus my Windows pc to copy files with no problems.
You should consider to buy a NAS or build/buy a dedicated inexpensive pc as a media server and use linux as the OS.
I only have 1 3tb hdd and still have more than 1tb of free space so no need to upgrade yet, but you already have 3 drives right?Last edited by Veronica; 01 October 2014, 02:07.

I have Windows 8.1 upgraded from Windows 8 but i don't think why Windows 7 shares would be different.

I have an old netbook lying around gathering dust. I've been contemplating the idea of using it as a Linux media server but eventually decided to go the easy route and directly connecting the hard drives to the android box. Now I'm regretting it...
I currently have two 2TB drives, with about 1.5tb of free space. I'll give this Servers Ultimate app a shot and see how it goes.
Thanks for your input.
