Or you could just check the specs on the back of the box!

What are the first six digits of your serial number (YFxxxx)?

      1012

      The serial number is YF1012. . .
That's according to the sticker on the back of the unit itself. This probably came through HSN rather than Big Lots. I'll see if i can hook it up to the Windows computer later to confirm.

        checking what chip you have.

You can also go to settings/about tablet directly on the device. I'm glad there are a few others with new devices in the same boat!

          Tried and failed

Ok, choices of OS are Win XP, Win 8, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Ubuntu didn't do much of anything when I tried the "hold volume buttons and push reset button with pin while connected to USB and power" thing. When I hooked the device up to the XP computer, it said something about M805somethingorother when it was looking for drivers. In Device Manager, I see a "Generic Storage Device" located on M805MC USB Device.

No dice with the buttons and pin procedure. Am I supposed to keep holding it while the computer does stuff, or let it off after a few minutes? When I let go of the buttons and pin, I get the charging screen (green 3D battery) and the device is off.

Looking in the "About Tablet" tab as melcab suggested, I don't see anything about the chip, but it says the under the kernel version it says "amlogic@droid #269" so I'm guessing that indicates a build for the Amlogic chip.

That's what mine says too, plus I also saw the back of the box said AML8726-M3 Cortex A9 1 GHz
which means the rockchip root won't work on our devices. So I'm hoping that the mission continues because GetJar is useless! I NEEDZ MAH PLAYSTORE! lol

Got Netflix working on the Next8P12 "Big Lots/Black Friday Special"

I know that this forum is about rootingthe elusive Next8P12, Amlogic, “Big Lots/Black Friday Special”. I have been following this forum like a TV Mini-series junky and myadmiration goes to all of you that have not given up on this quest. I'm new to this rooting business, but I have tried some of the fixesthat you have suggested; so, I share your frustrations. Nevertheless, I know that one of the objectives to rooting thisdevice is to get Netflix working in it.

After failing, many times, I challengedmy kids to come up a way of with installing Netflix. To my amusement(and pride), they did, so I'm sharing here how:

              1. Install the aptoide.apk from http://m.aptoide.com in your Nextbook.
              2. Run Aptoide and download Netflix version 1.8.1 build 573 from it.
              3. Accept and install this version of Netflix.

It worked on all three Nextbook Premium8SE (Next8P12, Android 4.0.4, Kernel version: 2.6.34) that I boughtfrom Big Lots on Black Friday!

Hope that this helps. Keep up the goodwork.

                Netflix

I managed to get Netflix running. I got it from 4shared. Haven't used it much yet, but I did play a vid to see if it worked and it seems to. What were the problems with it so I can look out for them on my device as well?

Thanks for the tip though. I'm not usually keen on getting paid apps for free, but most of the apps I'm looking for are free anyway so having another place to look for apps is great to know about. Still would like to have Playstore, though.
to the people on here working on it!

Mine is the same as yours, YF1012xxxxx. I got it at Big Lots on Black Friday.

Now, take a look at the back of the box it came in. If it is like mine, it says the following:
                  • 8.0" Color Multitouch CAPACITIVE Touch Screen
                  • 800 x 600 Pixels, 4:3 Display, 1080p
                  • AML8726-M3 Cortex A9 1GHz

The last line above indicates it has the AMLogic 8726-M3 chipset.

                    Amazon?

Now might be the time to mention that I was able to install the Amazon app store app, and download some apps with it. But now it won't work. I'm not sophisticated enough to know why. If I could get the .apk for Appbrain maybe I could load that up, too.

You can get a working version of Netflix via Amazon Appstore - it is a simple download/install. The current version is 2.1.1, and it loads okay on my tablet - I can't tell if it is fully functional because I no longer have a Netflix account. The previous version, 2.0.1, worked, too.

BTW, I recommend Amazon Appstore for now, until we get these things rooted and running Google Play. It is a crappy version of Google Play and some of the apps are actually out of date, but they do have a good selection. The only problem is the Appstore app itself gives me trouble on both of our tablets. If you switch to another app and come back, it no longer works properly, but you can either uninstall/reinstall the app or clear the data from the "Apps" settings screen and it will work again. You will have to log in again, but it will work until you do the same thing. If you enable notifications before it gets hosed up, something will run in the background to tell you when there are updates to your installed apps. Then you just go through the process again and you can download your updates.

I sent them some feedback about this problem and already downloaded an update to Amazon Appstore since I first installed it, but it didn't fix the problem. If you are having the same trouble, contact Amazon and let them know.

                        Great minds... LOL!

See the fix for Amazon Appstore in my previous post.

As for Appbrain, I have that installed, too, but all it does is link to Google Play! What a waste of time.

                          Netflix

I got Netflix from the Amazon App Store the other day, and it wouldn't work. It'd play the sound but not the video. Odd. I'll have to try the version from aptoid, too.

Check the version of Netflix you have installed. Amazon just updated mine from 2.0.1 to 2.1.1 in the last week or so.

Yeah, it's 2.1.1, and it's not working. It says it's playing, but now there's no video OR sound. If I tap the icon for subtitles, a picture will come up. Closed captions are working just fine.

And the Amazon App Store isn't working anymore, either. It has the search bar, but if I type something in and hit the "enter" key, it just makes the click sound and the text disappears and leaves a flashing cursor. No menu options either.

I've been having a problem with the Amazon app store too, both on my Android phones (CM7) and on the Nextbook tablet.

In order to get it going again I've resorted to clearing the app's data (tried cache and a reboot but it didn't change anything).

So, since I've noticed this on devices other than the Nextbook I wonder if it's just the Amazon (cr)App store being difficult.
