Ok here is a simple question can we not just alter the sh script and run it manually in terminal?

I did but I got the no permissions error.

I uesd to hav an option when I clicked tbe sh scripts to run a root but since I accidently clicked openas text I no longer have that option does anyone know how to reset tbe default file qssosjatins?

I am thinking that if I can get andrroid to run the sh scripas root then it would be a goks meyhod but I a,so may be totaly up the wrog tree

You need to run the script as superuser, and you need su installed in the /system/bin directory to be able to run as superuser. Did you try looking for su in the /system/bin directory? If it is there, you are already rooted!

Our exploit is that the init-pppd.sh script is editable by anyone (guess they overlooked that), but it only runs when a USB data modem dongle is attached and detected by the OS, which starts the ppp daemon and runs the init script.

Im a decent developer but most my experience is not with android. So Ill learn and keep going I have read alot and what bob is trying to do as well.

I agree with you - the build quality of these tablets is far better than I would expect for the price.

The eight inch tablet is exactly 8" x 6" overall. the display is about 6 3/8" x 4 5/8", and it is only about 3/8" thick. It weighs a little more than a pound.

So, it is slightly taller than the seven inch tablet and it is 4x3 vs widescreen (roughly 16x9).

Do you have access to a USB 3G modem dongle and an adapter cable that will allow you to connect it to your tablet? If so, you can probably root yours the way I did mine. It would be a good idea if someone who has one of the seven inch tablets could do this so Bob can get a system dump from it, rather than assuming he can tweak the ROM for an eight inch tablet to make one for yours. Just because they are similar doesn't mean that they are compatible from a hardware standpoint, especially since they apparently had some trouble getting Google to approve their eight inch design (ours) but they were able to get approval for yours. It is likely that there are some significant differences between the two designs.

I'm ordering one of the usb adapter cables you found off **** tonite. I may be able to hit up a family member for their USB modem dongle. It'll be a few days, but I'm going to start ordering the stuff I need in the next few hours here. Worst case, root method won't work and I get a useful cable, but hopfully I can root and dump the rom. Again, thanks for doing most of the leg work!

The thickness of the tablet is a smidgen under 1/2 inch.

The display area is 3 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches wide.

The tablet weighs slightly more than my fiance's Third generation Amazon Kindle.

Overall, I am happy with my Nextbook's build. It doesn't feel cheap or flimsy. The touch screen is snappy and responsive. The power and volume buttons are tight and springy.

The price was fantastic too. I was looking for an Android tablet that wouldn't set me back more than $100 as I let my 6 year old son play with it whenever he wants. He's not intentionally destructive or anything, but he is a six year old boy and the tablet has held up very well thus far.

I really hope we see a root for this Next7p12-8G sometime in the near future!

Some specific questions about that model. Does skype work on it (I believe you already said netflix does). If so, I'm about to go return this 8 in. to pick the 7 in. up from walmart with the play store. The only real reason I wanted root was to get a wider selection of free apps for my daughter.

Skype works just fine. The only gripe I have is the camera is .3 mega pixels, so the video everyone sees of me is not that great. But it totally works with no tweaking, just download from the play store and run.

Just buy one off ****. I ordered one for under $30. eegorr posted all the info a few posts back in this thread.

Funny how the nextbook site has ZERO documentation about these cables or any accessory compatibility.

Back to the same old problems.... U-boot is locked! Thus I cannot make a system.zip package as it will just come back with invalid signature again

We are going to have to find a u-boot.bin that is unlocked from some other M3 tablet or we will not get a stock ROM....

So once again, one problem solved and another stays

Anyway, I should have a system.zip this weekend.

Eegorr, yes please dump all the files from /system. Do you have a linux setup? As dumping to windows will blow all the symlinks and permissions.

To dump all the files and maintain all the lnks etc use this copy command from ADB


busybox cp -r --no-dereference --preserve=all system/* system2
where system2 is a directory on your linux box. That command will copy everything from /system to your Linux box. Then TAR the folder.

Rooted & Play Store

Hi, just letting everyone know that I've successfully rooted the tablet and installed the full GAPPS package without any issues (play store, voice search, et all).
I used this package for the GAPPS http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip and just copied the contents of each subfolder to the appropriate place within the system directory after installing ES File Explorer and enabling root ability in the settings.

Also was able to freeze most of the garbage with TBPro and the tablet runs decently.
If there's anything I can assist with in getting a rooted image for everyone, let me know.
I've got access to every VM imaginable, linux, ubuntu, you name it, and I'm fairly well versed with android devices.

Also for anyone attempting their own root, it seems you need an ACTIVE sim card with an accessible data plan to pull this off since the script won't run until it establishes an actual data connection. I've tried all of Verizon's cards in it to no avail, only got lucky when i stumbled upon an activated pre-paid sim from AT&T.
Even if you enter the APN info for verizon, it won't link up, but the ATT/Cingular card found all it's APN info just by putting the card in.
I'm using a HUWEI (sp?) unlocked modem that claims to be able to do CDMA/GSM but I'm guessing my LTE cards weren't sufficient for the task.

So since this is for a customer, so I may have to return it soon, but within the next day, if there's something I can do to further the progress, let me know.
