So I presume that despite having the right firmware version to go forward, the physical memory chip means if I do I am liable to end up with a bricked device.

That said I think you have mentioned in another post that if I were to try and flash the latest OEM firmware and it died that I could go back to Banggood and request a replacement or refund.

    Did I get that right?
I reckon you have a good chance of things going wrong like me. However I was able to recover it using NAND ROM flash mode.
I am thinking of trying to burn using the flash tool instead of OTA

I'm ok with experimenting if there is a way to recover

        Hi All,

        Just purchased a Mecool M8S Pro+, but i'm a little confused...
I've been reading about a "dodgy" batch of hardware and trying to work out if I'm affected, and If I indeed have the correct Hardware in general.

The Box from Banggood has s905x written on it, but the hardware serial sticker has "M8S Pro+ S912 2G 16G DDR3 DS" Written on it...
        The Firmware Version is "20170914.183646.V0619", Build is "M8S PRO+-userdebug 7.1.1 NHG47L".

I removed the lid and the larger IC is a "Kingston EMMC 16G-S100 Chip" Can't see Samsung anywhere..

I ran AIDA64 on it and it showed a "QUAD CPU", not an OCT, is this an s905x or a S912?

        Cheers All!

With the Kingston eMMC you should be fine. DKAngel confirmed above.

That is what I was afraid of. Maybe I will let you tinker and see how you progress given your last sentence.

So I can flash this rom and then put in an SDCARD for LibreELEC?

Cheers for the info, just starting out with these, but pilotting for a bunch of work buddies as they are all looking for WD TV Live replacements, etc.

              To all unlucky SEC701 owners!

I have that chip inside my box. I've flashed it with ATV just after arrival - without checking the installed firmware. That caused a lot of frustration and hangs. After checking almost all available firmwares, I have one that is rock-solid: M8S_PRO+-20170829.121614.V0321!

Flashed by: Burn_Card_Maker, all options ticked (erase in force). Filename changed to: m8s.img, card size: 8GB.

I can't say I'm happy, because that official firmware is a crap (I can't sort the 5.1 sound from Netflix, etc.), but the box works without any problems. I'll be happy to see an ATV solution

Press the reset button for about 15 seconds when first connecting power. Location is hidden here: http://freaktab.com/node/660688

Install "cpu temp" and monitor your temps. In the settings you can have it stay on your monitor as an overlay. Let us know what your temps are.

                  Thanks for the information.
I will flash my SEC701 box also with Burn_Card_Maker.
                  So far the USB_Burning_Tool failed.

Would it be possible to add Magisk support with this?

Via Magisk Manager (Only support v14.0+):
                    • This method does not need root, and also does not require a custom recovery.
However, you MUST have a stock boot image dump beforehand, and also be able to flash the patched boot image, either through fastboot/download mode or ODIN
                    • Install the latest Magisk Manager
                    • If you're planning to flash the patched boot image through ODIN, go to Settings > Update Settings > Patched Boot Output Format, and select .img.tar. For normal users leave it as the default .img
                    • Press Install > Install > Patch Boot Image File, and select your stock boot image file
                    • Magisk Manager will now patch your boot image, and store it in [Internal Storage]/MagiskManager/patched_boot.img[.tar]
                    • Flash the patched boot image to your device and reboot. VoilĂ !

This *might* work. It all depends on what the new kernel is checking as part of AVB. There seem to be some new integrity checks for L1 devices.

It is the first time I ordered a device in China. And yes - geekbuying gave me a 2/16 G device with the Samsung EMMC as described in the first posting..

English is not my mother tongue - so please tell me for better understanding :

Is this a hardware fault ?
Can I claim a new device from geekbuying with different EMMC chip ?

I already contacted them but here is the answer :
We would like to inform you that all Geekbuying staff are having a 7-days off for China National Day here from 1st Oct-7th Oct,2017(GMT+8).
Within this period, Order Verification, Email reply, Refund and Shipment will not be in service and all will get back to normal on 8th Oct,2017(GMT+8).

I would try shorting pins to enter Mask ROM mode. You'll have to crack the case, though. http://freaktab.com/forum/main-categ...short-location

                      It worked!!!
I have flashed it back to stock, and it seems to be running fine
Can you describe please the steps of process? When release the short pins jumper and reset button? I does the same process with shorting pins but stack in 4% on USB burning tool.

I've flashed my box (B041 SEC 713 chip) with 20170930 Nexus ROM ATV build using USB Burning Tool. No problems with flashing, device booted and works fine I think. What's the best way to check it? Any benchmarking app? Should I expect any lags in menu/launcher? (it seems to be a bit slower than my MiBox).
