EDIT - forgot to mention that I'm still 1.9B and didn't apply the Kernel patch to 2.0. Doubt it matters, but full disclosure and all.

    Hi Bill,

Would you please give more detailed instructions on how to flash this kernel. IE Which items to keep within folder (do you replace rileys kernel with the new one?) , and also which button to press. Just don't want to make a hash of this!

EDIT Only want to change kernel - not rom.

Here you go Mattie - I am just uploading a print screen of the correct buttons to tick. It is pretty simple, I just got home and did it myself as follows. - thi si s all done in the relevant RileyROM folder in the flash kit
1: Rename the current Kernel file to something else - just add something to the name.
2: Copy the new kernel file into the RileyROM folder and then rename it to simply 'kernel'
3: open the flash tool but untick ALL boxes except the kernel
4: hit reboot into flash mode - I had to try mine a couple of times before the computer was talking to the tablet
5: hit the flash button - bottom left and watch the text in the right window scroll through and come to the end.
5: Tablet will reboot itself and job is done.
Hope this helps - interestingly I ran the Antutu test as I am typing this and it has finished with a miserable score of 17284 from a reasonable 18255 before this flash! - I will do a reset now to see if there is any change, but I am fed up running a so called performance tool that gives different figures on the same machine from day to day (even when nothing has changed) so I am not going to play with this one any more - far better just to run the tablet and see how it 'feels'
just tried uploading the screenshot and it won't let me, but I think you get the picture anyway !

I wrote a post way back, #127 but nobody has come back with any more info on their tablets. It should be easy enough just to note the percentage before you leave it and check again when you next pick it up - after a couple or three hours should give us more info - I am losing over 10% overnight which does not seem right. If I leave my Galaxy Note alone for any length of time it barely registers a drop in battery. Hopefully I am an isolated case, but right now I don't know. Thanks!
        Hi Col

Is there a chance that your email client is checking on emails at a set interval?
When I set mine up, I made sure that I set the time for checking on new emails to Never.

Also some of the apps you have installed may be checking regularly on whether they need to be updated.

        Just an idea.

          Debloated

Been a new owner of this tablet, on stock rom 1.0.5_20131030, I would like to know which are the removed (debloated) apps before I flash this rom.
          Thank you for your answers!

Colin's instructions should get you an updated kernel, but I wanted to keep the original kernel untouched in the RileyROM directory under the flash tool so that if it didn't work, I could just start a new flash tool and select only the kernel check box. After I unzip'd kernel_cpu1608_gpu600_ddr720.img, I just copied that file to the directory where the Rom flash tool was, started the tool, removed all check boxes except kernel and then double clicked on the Path column to the kernel image. It defaults to get it from the RileyROM directory:
            RileyROM\kernel.img
After double clicking on that path and pasted the name of the .img
            kernel_cpu1608_gpu600_ddr720.img
clicked Reboot to Flash, waited until while RK Android Mass changed to No Found RK and then to Found RK Android Loader, and then clicked Flash ROM. No Erase NAND. It will only flash the items with a check box, so don't worry about changing the existing stuff.

It might be easier to do the rename to be kernel.img and then you don't have to change the path value. Maybe change the new image to kernelNEW.img in the RileyROM directory and only add NEW to the default path. I'm just kind of anal about leaving Riley's stuff as is so I could get back to original flash setup without doing anything.

              Cheers
I would expect the existing drivers to work now. The drivers are an RK3188 (both M9s), not drivers for an M9 Max or M9 Pro. Just plug in USB and you should see Found RK Android Mass USB, and when you click Flash ROM, it should change to Found RK Android Loader. I haven't ever done so, and have no way to know exactly how you got the current drivers installed, but they really should just be RK3188 drivers.

The changing scores will always be happening as long as you have other things installed (even some that don't SEEM to be running). The score after a fresh boot would be the closest you might get to a consistent number, but will decline when the processor is also being used for other things. Disable WiFi and 3G if you don't want something in the background checking if any installed app has an update at Play Store, if you have new email, ...

What you have installed, enabled, running, also has a large impact on battery life. I unplugged mine from the charger shortly after reading your post about battery drain. 8 hours 23 minutes later (I was asleep), the battery is at 97%. I'm WiFi and SUSPECT that the large drain is on 3G units. I rebooted 22 hrs 25 min ago and 45% of my CPU Spy time is 312 MHz and 29% is Deep Sleep. >IF< the 3G units can't get to Deep Sleep, it would probably drain the battery faster.

Thanx to Colin and Bill. Flash is done and working. Interestingly, I flashed the new kernel to KastyRom sms 10/10/13, so it appears this kernel will work with many different roms.
Colin, as a matter of interest:- on one of your previous posts you mentioned that you had no problems with GPS in China. Well the same goes for me in South Africa - almost immediate pinpointing of my location. I wonder why so many are having this problem.
I also agree with you regarding ANTUTU - seems it is not consistent - just depends on the day!!! I've had scores ranging from 17000 to 18800 - just not good enough for a benchmark app.
Try GEEKBENCH 3 and QUADRANT. Their scores do not vary as much.
                  Cheers!

This is a sure fire way to settle the GPS fix issues on M9pro devices (and be used on other GPS enabled devices as well)

First you to download (NTPSync) on your tablet and set it to run on every reboot: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...id=org.ntpsync

Then uninstall the GPSFix or any other quick fix apps from Playstore asthey WILL overwrite the settings in the mods gps.conf file, so with goes the advantage.

The fix has to be hand installed one by one into the SYSTEM/ETC folder on the device(unzipped this and extract the files) The installation files are mostly set to permission "rw-r-r" ownership to "root.root"
Instructions are included in the zipped folder.

Use this solution that I have attached NO need to wait for hours or even 20 minutes. That is not the way to go for android device. It just would have towork within less then 5 minutes to get it up and running.GPS HELP Files.zip

Thanks Bill. I'll give it a try tonight (been waiting on the M9Pro to finish its initial battery charge).

My bad - didn't notice until Nordo quoted me. When you click Reboot to Flash (not Flash ROM) is when it should change from Mass Storage to Loader.

Thanks Bill, finally some real feedback on the battery drain - You are right about Antutu, but my checks have always been the first thing done after reboot/flash, and everything else is constant, so they should be consistent. Yes, I have a 3G version, but no SIM installed - yes, I guess the radio could still be on and attempting to transmit/receive, so could be the drain on battery. I do see a large percentage of Held Awake in gsam battery monitor, but for some reason it won't let me drill down to see what is being held awake - is there another battery monitor that I could use? This one I also use on my Note and it does tell me on that? Coincidentally my note does have a SIM fitted and is monitoring 3 email accounts and only drops a few percent overnight, so something is definitely wrong ............but I am never far from a charging point, so it has not run completely down on me yet.

I´m still on 1.7b for now on my WiFi M9pro and had also a big drain of battery life. Then I installed Deep Sleep Battery Saver and that boosted my battery life! The Tablet now goes into deep sleep and looses about 1-2% a night.
So I´m happy for now, but will update soon to a newer riley rom and test again without ds battery app...
