It doesn't matter. You can choose that folder itself. You will anyways browse to the innermost folder when you recover. You can try browsing to it from recovery to see how it works. Don't restore. Just reach the folder from recovery

You worry a lot. Try. You will anyways browse to innermost folder. The one which has date in name. You can keep twrp folder or backup folder. You will anyways browse to it.

Did you tick all partitions when making backup? If yes. Then download SuperSU zip. Flash it. If it boots fine after flashing the zip and you see SuperSU app in app drawer, consider it success. If you can't boot, then boot twrp and restore your backup. Report after this.

Download and flash from twrp. Download and put the zip in thumb drive. In twrp, select install. Select storage and choose your thumb drive. Select the new downloaded SuperSU zip. And swipe to flash it. After its done. Unplug and replug the box. If it boots fine, check app drawer. If all has gone well, SuperSU app will appear. If it hangs at boot or fails to boot, then boot twrp and restore your backup. Report after doing either of these.

I've flashed my box a dozen times and I didn't use the reset button once. Also, I never needed the power supply plugged in either. I guess YMMV.

picked up this "H96 MAX X2" off of amazon recently and I've only been able to find one firmware that has worked on the device

I found the firmware here "aml_s905x2_H96Max_4g_mac_wifi_lpddr3_20190305" ; Other link to firmware for reference here

Silkscreen on the actual board say:
                          • s70-905x2-v3
                          • 2019-02-18

                          Images that havent worked:
                          • X96Max_V311_4G_190302_to_H96MaxX2
                          • X96Max_V311_4G_190302

At one point I bricked the device but I was able to short out the nand and flash it

                          Nand pins here

                          Pic's of board

Does anyone know what other images I can use ?

If your data cable is good, you dont need reset button or power cord. I used a bad wire for 2 days, had multiple errors and non detections. Then I went to my local vendor, returned the wire and got a costly wire. No error ever since. every firmware just flashes. PC usb 3.0 port and box 2.0 port.

If your software and driver is setup correctly and wire is good quality, your flashing will be flawless.

What do you mean "images that havent worked"?
All those firmwares work for most of us. You may be having some other box or a clone.
Did you use, full format and erase bootloader?
