If you need to use it with WiFi, you do NOT want this box......... WiFi is horrible.

The custom ROMs out there generally aren't improving the WiFi driver, so you'll get the same performance as with the OEM firmware. If you look at the internal antenna on these boxes, you'll understand why the wireless range is very limited.

I just ran another test on my box, I disconnected the Ethernet cable from my box and used my 2.4 Ghz WiFi connection from my Asus router. I ran Netflix using only my WiFi connection, and tested using El Fuente: 60 Mail, it is playing at 5800 kbps, 1920 x 1080 at 30fps, or 1080P HD. There is NO buffering at all. My router is approximately 24 feet from my Mecool box with NO obstructions in between.

Ran a speed test and got 43.5 Mbps, download speed, about half of what I get with Ethernet.

Is the wifi any worse than these other cheap boxes though? I don't need anything amazing, the box will be within 20ft of their router, on the same floor with just one wall separating it.

What I found with the M8S Mini II is that the wifi performance was VERY hit and miss. I purchased over half a dozen of them and I think almost half of them had unusable WiFi, so it seems to be just poor QC. With the box in the same location (within 20ft) some boxes would only get 5-10Mbps, while others would max out my bandwidth. This scares me from buying another one and I was hoping this box would at least be more reliable than the M8S Mini II.

Not antenna's fault Guest - I tried installing external 3db antenna mounted on side of box, antenna pigtail wired directly to the PCB - it made zero difference
Most respectfully clarkss12 - 24' (esepcially completely unobstructed) is really nothing and not the type of range most users would locate a remote box
My test was in separate room (which is more likely to be the case) and only a few Mbs - compared with ~ 60 on my MiBox in same location
It's just rubbish in this feature but for many Ethernet or Powerline adapter will be best solution - so best to just go into it accepting this is simply one element that is weak

Hi boys, I'm really tempted to buy this box but I'm scared about the possibility of frequent freezing : does a factory reset or the installation of a custom firmware can solve this problem or it's a limit of the soc?

I just reverted to the "M8S_PRO+-V0321_Stock-20170825.img", which is a stock android. Other than Youtube, most stable so far, WiFi performance is very good (40 Mbps).
However, when using Youtube (stock or ATV version), the device is heating up and freezes completely (need to disconnect the power supply). I suspect that it is also related to the resolution of the played videos.
Is there a way to limit the resolution over the HDMI, option that exists in ATV?

"System First Setup APP , Don't power off ! Please wait ..."

Hmmm!

Update:

Used the Front Button Recovery to flash the update...
Updated but failed the erase cache ?
Re-booted and Frozen on Swirly Splash Screen (with ick-ick-ick noise)
Re-booted again and now stops at "MECOOL"

Fecked !

Gets to 98% .........
Fails ERROR
[18:59:17 180][HUB3-5][Err]--failed:Verify Failed with sha1sum, origin sum "9f8f1e1bed1040783db8aeedee9befe2d299e498" != gen sum "a2372f1e08ecdeaece443a65424a6576f3f8f037"

Doesn't boot at all now - Black screen.

Perseverance, don't give up, have you tried the firmware from Geekbuying?? If not, give it a try, if yes, give it another try.......

I would guess the power supply as the problem. I have one more suggestion, ask Geekbuying to send you a replacement power supply, or give you the information on the power supply so you can purchase one. I have both the Pro and Pro Plus and they have the same connector. Post on this link and explain all your freezing issues, and others that have the same issues, and perhaps Geekbuying will send you a replacement PS to try.
