I've been having some quirky behavior in the video apps like the HDHomeRun, Live Channels and even the SPMC/Kodi app so I decided to try the USB Burning Tool method to load the ROM, I had previously used the SD card method as it seemed quicker and easier. Anyway, for some reason, even after reading the experience of others here, I can't seem to get any recognition that the ROM is being applied.

I open the BT app, load the image - it shows at the bottom of the app window, I assume that's where it's supposed to show? And I question that as nothing ever appears in the Device ID status windows.
I hold down the reset button, which I'd swear is just a power button as that's what shows up on the screen when you press it when the unit has power.
      I Start the USB app
I plug the USB cable into the OTG port
Power light is red then turns blue and I release the reset/power button.
The box starts normally as it always does, same apps, same everything, nothing has changed.

I'm guessing that my WinPC is not connecting to the device given that nothing shows up in the Device ID status windows.

I did get a screen that I assume was something to do with TWRP, but I had no way to navigate around so I just pulled the power.

      Thanks

        Hi,

When I tried to get the USB Burn Tool connected I had to keep the Reset button pressed for 7-8 seconds after applying power.
Method that worked for me ...
        Start USB Burn Tool
        Connect OTG Cable
        Press-Hold Reset Button
        Apply Power
~7/8 Seconds Device is recognised in USB Burn Tool
        Release Reset Button

I always got an error when trying to burn but my box had a faulty install from not wiping before doing a zip install previously (?)

If you see TWRP then the Reset has been recognised but not the OTG Burn Tool link (I think)

        HTH

When you say "apply power" I assume you mean the power cord? I ask as when the USB cable gets connected it starts to apply power to the box anyway, the actual power cord is not even needed.

While holding the reset button down, I get the initial red power light and then it turns blue and it doesn't really seem to matter how long I hold the reset button down, the box still powers up normally. Are you saying continue to hold the reset button even after the power light has turned blue and the box is starting up in normal fashion?.

          Thanks

When your box "connects" to your computer, you will "hear" your computer make a noise, just make sure the volume is up. I have several Amlogic boxes, and this is a rough one to get to connect, but it will connect. Just make sure you use the correct USB port when you connect it to your box. You just have to depress the "reset" and hold it while you connect the male to male USB cable to your computer. You do not even have to have the burning tool running for your computer to connect to the box, you can open the tool after it connects and it will work. I have 2 USB 2 ports on the front of my computer, and a 4 port USB 2 powered HUB that I keep swapping ports to get my computer to "see" my box.........

You do NOT need to connect the power to your box while you are connecting to your computer using the OTG port on your box.

My USB C port (using a USB-C to USB cable reversed from normal as an OTG) doesn't power my box for some reason, but if you get power OK from your USB then great.
I have been using the rear USB port, as that was what I had read was the one to use ? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes I hold the button for about 7 seconds after the LED turns blue until my box registers in the USB Burn Tool window.

I just tested my Mecool M8S Pro PLUS to see how it connects to my computer. I tried all 4 USB 2 ports on the front of my computer, but it would not connect. I tried my powered USB 2 hub and it worked. I tried 3 times and it worked all 3 times. First, I made sure my volume on my computer was turned up so I could hear it connect.

I used my home made male to male USB 2 cable to connect to the USB port on my box using the port furthest away from the microSD card slot. I then depressed the "reset" button with a paper clip (what a pain for a location of the reset button), then connected the other end of the USB cable to a port on my powered USB hub, 3 seconds later I heard the sound that it connected. I tried 3 times, and each time it worked. Two of those times the Amlogic burning Tool was not running, but after my box was "connected" to my computer, I then opened the burning tool and it was ready to burn the ROM.

From these test, it would seem that my USB ports on my computer do not have enough power to power this box using the OTG port on this box. However, it has worked before, using the USB ports on m computer, but was very iffy.

So, I would suggest using a powered USB hub, and that should work. Not sure everyone has them laying around, but I have several of them and one always connected to my computer.

Maybe I misread which port is which, I've been trying the USB port next to the SD slot, is that not the right one?

If the box powers up with just the USB cable connected wouldn't that indicate the computer is providing enough power?

I'm going to give the procedure another go later tonight.

Could it be because the USB cable I'm using is USB3?

I used to have a powered USB2 hub, I might still have it buried in the boxes of electronic "stuff" I have in my garage, probably 6 boxes to go through! :-D

I was surprised to find that these Amlogic S905 and 905x boxes do not need power to connect to the computer. All my other boxes, I have to connect the "power" to them to make them work with the burning tools running on my Windows computers.

Haha, well then, that might explain a lot!

Okay, using the rear most port, I get a "Teanwinn" screen then a screen with the heading of "unmodified system partion" with some buttons at the bottom of the screen, "swipe to allow modifications". But no way to navigate.

?????? You are confusing me. You should be doing something similar to what I am showing in this video, but using a different box.

You are booting into TWRP recovery, which indicates you don't have a connection between box and PC - USB burning tool takes precedence if there is a connection, but only works on the rear USB port on the M8S Pro+.
Either the burning tool driver isn't installed or the cable is not compatible.

That makes sense, I'll be given it another try later.

                                Is there any difference, signal-wise, between a USB2 and a USB3 cable? Should I hunt down a USB2 cable?

                                Thanks
