I tested with MX Player Pro and as you stated, it only played the core DTS, and not DTS HD. Tested again using VLC, same thing, DTS core only.

Out of curiosity, since I just installed this version and had not tested Kodi yet, I ran a test. I use the Alpha version of Kodi and tested my Avatar Blueray rip in MKV container and my Denon AVR shows DTS-HD MA.

Are you testing it as a downloaded file or streaming......

Edit: downloaded it from my Windows computer and copied it to a pen drive. Inserted pen drive into my "L" box and tested the file.
Using VLC player, it played in multi-channel
Using MX Player Pro, again, it only played the DTS core
Using Kodi, it play in DTS-HD MA.
I have indeed been testing with downloaded files, on a USB stick plugged into the box. The URL I gave was just the source of those test files so we could run identical tests.

I'm getting results similar to your tests above with the exception being that I'm actually getting DTS-HD passthrough on VLC and still none on Kodi. You may have forgotten to enable "Digital audio output" in VLC's preferences as it's not enabled by default. I also only get multi-channel output on some of those files when it isn't enabled.

As for Kodi, I've uninstalled 17.6 and installed the 18 Leia Alpha but I'm still only getting DTS-Core coming through to my Onkyo reciever. Could I ask what your kodi audio settings look like? Do you have the "TrueHD capable receiver" and "DTS-HD capable receiver" settings available on expert mode?

My tests were done using kodi 17.6.every hd format worked as it should.that tells me mecool box supports passthrough of all these formats.other players may not fully support these formats.if I get time I will repeat tests using Mx player and VLC .what I don't understand is why you don't get true_hd and dts-hd options on kodi.please try kodi 17.6 again and see if you can get all options showing.

I've tried both 176.6 and 18 alpha a number of times, neither show DTS-HD and TrueHD options in the audio settings. Strangely I just installed SPMC 16.6 via aptoide and it shows those options. It however crashes when attempting to play any video of any encoding.

However, they switched from the QCA9377 to the BCM4335 wireless chipset, so WiFi and Bluetooth don't work on any of my M8S PRO L boxes.

My strategy was to just pull over the latest QCA9377 kernel and init.amlogic.wifi.rc, repacking the build image using the usual procedure. However, this results in a hang after the logo screen. No matter what I did, the old kernel would always fail to load, and the new kernel is missing the kernel compatibility layer that the QCA9377 uses through compat.ko.

Does anyone have a newer OEM firmware release for the M8S PRO L SKUs that used the old QCA9377 wireless chipset? The latest I can find is 20180205.111652.V0928.
Please, share the new version with the new wireless chip, it's from the LB version of the m2s pro l box, it's cause of this new hardware that a lot of us are having trouble installing your custom rom

How is Kodi 17/18 with this rom ? On stock rom i can't get hardware acceleration without glitch, and without hardware acceleration playback is pretty laggy.

Try running LibreELEC or CoreELEC from a microSD card and see it there is a difference.

One other thought, try changing your HDMI cable, If the HD audio settings are not showing in your Kodi installs, then it is not "seeing" your AVR, only stereo speakers. This is assuming that your settings are correct.

Tried that a couple a days ago, no issue.

Yeah, my current cable is HDMI 1.4, works perfectly fine for HD passthrough with my windows box. I had already ordered a HDMI 2.0 cable to eliminate that as a factor, should be arriving tomorrow. I'll re-test with that cable and report back.

The problem has to be in the hardware chain and the HDMI cable is the most obvious. I have a 4 port HDMI cable between my AVR and Mecool box, and it passes through my HD audio without issues.
