Ya, i know this is manufacturer fault, but as buyer we can only "play the game" with sellers... so...

In my understanding is that there are 3 series of eMMC :
- first batch (original magendaz one) with samsung emmc
- second batch with SEC emmc => faulty boxes
- third batch with kingston emmc

For now, it seems logical that new orders will be taken in kingston batch.
But there could be old stocks to sell.... so...
... perhaps some sellers are already out of SEC-stocks and sells now and only kingston ?
Could be cool to identificate these to buy safely from them.

Just a word of warning: Never buy from Geekbuying. I have tried to contact them several times the last month, but they never reply. They are not interested in helping whatsoever. The box now goes in the bin, it is totally useless. I do my business at Gearbest from now on.

My box was delayed so I have sent few emails and always got an answer. You have to remember they had some holidays recently.
I would say to always buy direct from China (like Geekbuying) you might wait a little bit but you will get latest box with latest updates. Buying from Amazon you are probably buying something which is in warehouse for long time (old stock).

Can you tell us the seller of you box, and date of order ?

It can be interesting to know where to buy and where NOT to buy.
If we can determinate from which seller we can have a good box, orders could be more safe !

I tried flash it with a custom ROM, but due to the bad eMMC the box hangs after few seconds. I have tried everything, nothing works on this. Including the original firmware. Sorry to say.

I was getting lots of crashes to OFF Mode with the latest ATV V0619 - Netflix being temperamental I thought, but everything seemed to be crashing. Default reset didn't help either.

BUT then I did a Default Reset and left English (US) chosen during install ...
No crashes now that I am not trying to use (GB)

Tried to use an old FW.zip update using TWRP on my new No-Reset box and it refuses as not correct box ? M8SPro+ vs p21x I think.
I this because of the changes in bootloader I think you mentioned.
I am guessing the only way back would be USB Burn ?

Working well again anyway, now I am not selecting (GB)

That's just because the OEM update script won't install on a box unless it has an older build date than 1505804750. If it's the same (which is the case for mine, since it's based on that latest release), they abort the installation. If it's important to you to roll back and you can't use the burn package, just let me know and I'll modify their Edify script from "!less_than_int()" to "greater_than_int()".

I downloaded Kodi 17.4 from the play store, installed my build, changed audio settings to passthrough, all working very well, excellent picture and surround sound. All for £23 :-)

Unfortunate that I have a box with the faulty chip that may limit updates/changes.

It's a 2GB/16GB, may I suggest that memory gives you options not power. I would never buy a box with less than 2GB of RAM.

This is the version I purchased:- MECOOL M8S Pro+ TV Box Amlogic S905X Android 7.1 - 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM, there are different Mecool M8S boxes around, important detail is the 'Pro Plus', currently selling at around £30, I'd post a link but I may get in trouble, if you google description in blue above you will find suppliers.

Amazon are very good with returns, if I bought mine from Amazon I would return it for a replacement.

Yup contacted amazon and told them about the emmc defect AND the fact that it wont even play Netflix in 1080p (only 480p)... The tech support guy was like "WHAT? It is advertised at 4k!" ... then said he had no problem authorizing a return.
